More often than not, we see a tendency among jiu jitsu coaches who claim to offer their students a scientific approach to fighting. These coaches are for most part extremely well-educated, some of them are even holders of graduate diplomas in philosophy, and they are extremely successful selling their DVD’s and online training programs. They stack thousands upon thousands of martial arts enthusiastic on their social media who are desperate for a shortcut, or a scientific tech...nique that will give them just the edge they need to overcome their training partners. It occurs to me that they either do not know the presuppositions that the scientific method entails, or they just take advantage of a well-intended but philosophically untrained jiu jitsu practitioner. I am not saying this because they are very successful in selling false promises, but because it amazes me how their followers perhaps are not familiar with philosophical terminology neither have them the chance to read the works of Jigoro Kano who have claimed to have a scientific method back in the beginning of the 20th century. The most important question here is not whether or not someone has obtained knowledge of various techniques proved to efficiently work in the battlefield, but rather if the scientific method is the most adequate method to qualify the best jiu jitsu training system. For now, I leave my students and friends with one question, how would the claims of these coaches stand against the scientific method itself? See more

I am very interested in this topic of self-help techniques through the lenses of a theistic worldview. In the high performance sport competition world is noticed how athletes have a tendency to adopt a quasi-religious vocabulary in order to internalize their beliefs and objectivize their athletic performance. As a result of these influence, I became very adept of some of these lines of thought that ultimately wants to offer you a rationalized approach to control reality. Thes...e self-help techniques are themselves a great placebo effect, and they often produce a significant amount of motivation enabling a person to achieve great things. However, we should move away from these ephemeral self-help techniques because they are anti-theological, hence empty of substance, and it often leads to saturation once your mind and reality have offered you everything they are capable of obtaining.
