A great Back to School read for all parents and educators! I am only part way through and feeling like this book needs to be read by anyone who spends time wi...th children. We are spending WAY too much time worrying and focused on test scores and academics, and we have forgotten that children learn the most and the best in their own time during free play. In the first pages of this book, it also states that the average 7 year old has already spent 1 year and 3 months of their life alone on a screen, more than 2.5x the amount of time spent playing outside with others. We must endeavour to turn this around, and to create safe spaces for the kids to play, without direction. In the early 90’s I walked myself home from school alone at age 7. We lived in the Hastings Sunrise area of East Vancouver. I am pretty sure that wouldn’t happen now. Our world and media streams (news, social threads, etc) are filled with reasons that continuously push us into hovering over our children more and more. Our cities/towns/neighbourhoods don’t always feel safe to us. Mostly when I pass by our parks, I see adults following their kids on the playground. Adults with their child on the slides and stairs instead of a jungle gym filled with toddlers and preteens. We must take a look at how this lack of freedom and self-directed play can take a toll on our children. We must sift through, and question any perceived dangers we face in terms of child safety, and do whatever we can to ensure they have what they need to learn and grow best. It’s our job to do right by our kids! #children #childdevelopment #freeplay #school #homeschool
