Gimli Unitarian Church 07.06.2021

Sunday, April 4, at 10:00 a.m. (Central) Members and friends of Gimli Unitarian Church are invited to join the congregation of the Unitarian Church of Underwood on Easter Sunday for an online presentation by Rev. Stefan Jonasson. WAITING FOR A RESURRECTION More than a year into the coronavirus pandemic, which has claimed the lives of many, impaired the health of many more, and curtailed the normal activities of nearly everyone, we find ourselves awaiting a resurrection of sorts not some biblical miracle, just a return to the marvels of everyday life as we have known it. Science has been our greatest ally in fighting the pandemic and minimizing its harm, but it has taken a spiritual toll on all of us. If science has given us vaccines, perhaps familiar myths and tales may help restore our hope.

Sunday, February 28, at 10:30 Eastern / 9:30 Central: LOVING MERCY LIKE WE MEAN IT Speaker: Rev. Stefan Jonasson / Service Leader: Rob Van Wyck... Whatever else it may be, mercy is forgiveness from a position of power. It is compassion extended without judgment or more commonly, despite judgment. It is kindness given not randomly, but precisely, whether or not it is deserved. Mercy calls us to active compassion towards those who are within our reach not only when it's easy, or convenient, or merited, but most especially when it is difficult.

We didn't create this one, but it still gave us a chuckle. We like to think that if Bernie were looking for a congenial community while visiting Gimli, where he'd find sympathetic friends, he'd fit right in with the town's Unitarian congregation. We welcome aliens, too.

"One day you’re going to look back on these days and realize you weren’t a failure or a fraud or a lousy parent or a crappy partner," writes John Pavlovitz about the difficult times we're living through. "You’re going to see that you were a frickin’ superhero doing world-saving work in Kryptonite circumstances that should have leveled you but didn’t. You’re going to see that it was your finest hour. And because you likely can’t see that right now, I wanted you to know that I see it in you."

Friðarsúlan (The Peace Column) of the Imagine Peace Tower at Viðey in Reykjavík, Iceland, on the last day it will be illuminated for 2020. The beacon is kindled each year on John Lennon's birthday (October 9) and kept lit until the anniversary of his death (December 8). This year marked his 80th birthday and the 40th anniversary of his murder.

"We find that your insistence on the right to worship is not in keeping with Christ’s command to love our neighbour," write Rev. Erik Parker and many other concerned ministers from half a dozen denominations. "We find that your actions disregard the dangers of the COVID-19 in our community and that they only serve to create potential harm for our healthcare system and healthcare workers already pushed beyond capacity. "We find that your insistence on individual freedoms over collective responsibility are an affront to the many individuals, families, friends, community groups and other faith communities who are refraining from gathering for the sake of our neighbours."
