April 26th is #KidsandPetsDay! The following was written by Amy Smith, our Director of Medical Services and mother of two. "Kids love pets, and as long as they are taught how to safely interact with them, many accidents can be prevented. I have always been a big advocate for pet safety with children and now, being a Mom, I am even moreso. Getting a puppy when your child is young means they can grow up together and the puppy will see the child as a litter mate. This can be go...od or bad depending on the socialization the puppy received while it was in the litter. Because of this, the puppy may play wrestle with your child, nip or jump on them. It is important to teach the puppy that this is not acceptable play. Remember, with any pet something that is cute while they are small could become be very dangerous when they are older. Things such as letting a dog jump up on someone, growling or showing aggression to someone/something. Being sure to teach your child to respect animals is just as important as teaching the pet. If they give hugs to their dog at home who has grown used to it, then go to another dog whose not been around children and do the same thing, they can potentially get bitten. Their cat at home may tolerate their tail being pulled, whereas another cat may not. They should also learn to pet gently and not to chase, jump, climb on, scream or yell at/around pets. There are many warning signs that dogs give off if they are uncomfortable with the situation. They may avert their eyes, put their tail between their legs, put their heads down, turn away (as shown in the first photo), lick their lips, lift their lip, growl or bite. It is important to teach the child these warning signs or remember them yourself so you can remove the child from the situation. Signs in cats are harder to read, but they usually leave the area and hide. Some will put their ears back, twitch their tail and get dilated pupils. These signs can progress to growling, hissing, puffed up tail, staring, swatting, striking with claws out, biting, and howling. If the child learns to leave the cat alone when it runs away, bites and scratches can be prevented. As pets get older or become sick, something they had been used to when they were younger may cause them pain now such as pulling the cat’s tail. They may have arthritis in the tail which hurts. Dogs that were used to the child laying on them may now have an upset stomach that hurts to be laid on. When this occurs it is a good idea to let your veterinarian know so they can keep track of it, as it may be a warning sign that your pet isseriously ill and the sooner the problem is addressed, the better managed or healed the pet can be. The second photo shows what a positive interaction between a child and a dog may look like where the dog seems happy and engaged. In conclusion, children who learn to respect pets and pets that are well trained are the best way to prevent serious biting and scratching accidents."

When you enter our practice you will see the smiling face of one of our receptionists. The receptionists record patient weight and direct the patient and client to the exam room. If you call, you will hear their friendly voices over the phone as they assist your needs. These ladies open and close our office, answer phones, take excellent care of our appointment scheduling and process payments. Receptionists also remind clients of upcoming appointments via phone call the day p...rior to your appointment. They perform office duties such as filing, faxing, and photocopying. When you call in a prescription or have one faxed from another clinic, our receptionists will fill prescriptions as per the veterinarian. They order, receive and stock inventory and supplies needed for the clinic. These ladies do a wonderful job of keeping things running smoothly! Happy #veterinaryreceptionistweek

** PSA ** According to the 2019 Canadian Animal Shelter Statistics Report, Canadian shelters took in more than 78,000 cats and 28,000 dogs in 2019. Dogs and cats in shelters without ID are much less likely to be reunited with their owners. ... This past weekend, American Humane celebrated "Every Day is Tag Day" to promote awareness about the importance of pet ID tags, tattoos and microchips in helping pets return home safely if they stray. ID tags should include at minimum the owner’s telephone number(s) and the pet’s name. We also strongly encourage pet owners to consider having their pets microchipped, which is permanent identification that will always be with your pet. Nearly all animal shelters routinely microchip scan animals upon intake, and most veterinary clinics have scanners as well. #EveryDayisTagDay #PetID #PetSafety

If your dog comes into the room and you can smell him, he needs a bath! Giving your dog regular baths is an essential part of good hygiene. But in addition to keeping your dog’s coat clean, bathing also helps keep it healthy and free from parasites!

When entertaining, keep alcoholic beverages out of reach from your pets! Dogs have a sweet tooth and may find mixed drinks, coolers, and liqueurs too good to pass by! It does not take much alcohol to cause toxicity in smaller dogs.
