I would like to acknowledge the many great cultural communities that live here and contribute to our City. I have had the pleasure of getting to know many lovely people from so many different cultural backgrounds, including our Persian community this message is for you! Merci!

I had the pleasure of meeting two lovely young girls at Andrews on 8th. Through their homeschooling program, they have taken an interest in this civic election. What impressed me was their passion for our environment: Let’s start recycling soft plastics curb side. And why not?! Thanks to these young, future voters for your great ideas and taking an interest in improving our City.

This week I had three separate experiences which linked to one common theme: giving back to the community within which we live. I toured The Lookout Society’s North Shore Housing Centre, a minimal-barrier homeless shelter supporting our most vulnerable here on the North Shore. As I walked through the Centre, I really felt the support and care given by the staff to those coming in. They accept people for where they are at. There is no expected length of stay, and staff work ...to help people find a permanent home that is affordable, a task that is becoming increasingly more difficult in North Vancouver. The shelter also has 25 permanent units that can be occupied for up to two years and is available for those on low or fixed incomes. In recent years, these have been consistently full with wait lists. There is also an alarming trend of seniors now relying on their services. It is clear that there is a strong need for more low-income housing, and the City must work collectively to make this type of housing a priority.
