We eat plant-based at camp. And that includes a lotta chips. We eat well. We eat wisely. We eat for nourishment. ... We eat for pleasure. Bottom line: we eat. And we have no shame in that. #girlsaregonnarise @barbarichphoto

Self loathing has no place here. Period. So we’re gonna keep working our tails off to give the next generation of girls the tools and resources and love and camaraderie and respect and understanding that will help them walk tall and squash self-loathing when that beast dares show up. You are not something to loathe.... You are something to love. Period. #girlsaregonnarise

Each morning we take a look at a topo map and the girls gather ‘round. A little impromptu route-planning and map-reading. This is not the soul of our camp. At all. It is not a masterclass in mountain navigation. But it’s important. Because the girls learn to be curiousabout where they are and where they’re going. They learn to rely on themselves and their intuition, their knowledge and their guts. They learn to ask questions about things they don’t know and to not see the asking as a failure in the slightest. They learn to equip themselves with insight and preparedness for a journey. They learn to expect hard things ahead, to foresee joy and challenge, and to trust that they can move through them together. And they do. #girlsaregonnarise @barbarichphoto

We are moving full steam ahead preparing for camp this year. And so many people in this community have been impossibly generous. Just this week, we received two backpacks and one backcountry sleeping bag in the mailfluently used adventure gear that we will gift to the girls who attend camp to help eliminate barriers to the outdoors long after camp is over. We’re still in need of 5 more packs. 55-60L is ideal. These can be new or used. DM us to donate. #girlsaregonnarise

Bumps aren’t bad; they’re experiences. They’re lessons and transitions. They are pivot points and reassessments. Bumps are moments that pass. Sometimes they are scary. Sometimes they hurt. Sometimes we think they’re gonna hurt and they don’t. At all. If it’s bumpy, carry on. You’re doing this living thing right. ... #girlsaregonnarise

We went to camp with a handful of teenage girls who didn’t know each other, who were at first glance completely different in about a thousand ways, and they showed up brave and bold and vulnerable and ready to crack wide open and let their inside love shine. Over the course of a week together, from sunrise to sunset, under a beaming summer sun and beneath a blanket of silver stars, they grew and evolved and softened and stood tall. They were phoenixes rising. It was the sin...gle most inspiring thing we’ve ever born witness to. So we created a series of postcards with all the lessons that we learned together. You can buy them from our shop online for $30; the proceeds will fund our 2021 camps and the next handful of extraordinary teenage girls who don’t know they’re extraordinary yet... but they will! #girlsaregonnarise

FREE intro to meditation course for teenage girls starts next Wednesday night at 7pm PST. All teenagers who identify as girls between the ages of 14-18 are welcome. Why the heck would you want to take a meditation course for an hour after a long day of school? Because high school is hard sometimes. Pandemics are hard all the time. Being a teenager is hard most times. And meditation helps reduce anxiety and depression. And you’re likely feeling a least a little of both. ... Slow Your Roll is a 4-week intro to meditation led by Certified Meditation Teacher Tess Sloane @tessysloane. She’s donating her time to teach the fundamentals of meditation and guide us through some heart felt, feel good meditations. You’ll learn how to take small moments for yourself in this crazy mixed up world and just breathe through the hard stuff to get to the other side. Starts Wednesday, November 4. Link in our bio for details and to sign up. #girlsaregonnarise

A short story about these two girls. They were struggling. So they asked for help. Five other girls stepped up to help them. No one felt like less. ... Just a small reminder, friends, that were in it together and asking for help is never a sign of weakness. #girlsaregonnarise @barbarichphoto

Girl In The Wild 02.10.2020

Just a small gang of girls in the alpine who three days earlier listed all the things they disliked about their bodies and said them out loud. All the things. Pages of things. And then we gave those things to the wind and decided to just be. And we dipped into an alpine lake. We suntanned on the rocks. We did handstands and cheerleading jumps and had long conversations in bathing suits, like it was no big thing. Because it wasn’t. We were simply being a small gang of girls in the alpine. #girlsaregonnarise @barbarichphoto

It’s our opinion that self-confidence is a right. And it’s hard sometimesdamn near impossiblefor girls to have it in this mixed up world. So we decided to do something about it. That something is free confidence-building camps for teenage girls in wild spaces. It costs us approximately $30,000 to put on one camp. We fund this camp partly by creating and selling rad apparel and productslocally made t-shirts, tanks, leggings, journals, and postcards, plus toques and hats... (coming soon). All proceeds from all sales go directly to funding camp. The more we sell. The more girls rise. And we really love it when girls rise. Check out our shop online. And a bajillion thanks for your support. #girlsaregonnarise

Girl In The Wild 02.09.2020

Ruth Bader Ginsburg once said: Dont be distracted by emotions like anger, envy, and resentment. These just zap energy and waste time. That woman didnt mince words. And we loved her for it. Theres a whole lotta anger, envy, and resentment happening among and between girls. There is harsh judgement. Unhealthy comparison. Bullying for the sake of perceived popularity. Girls are angry. Theyre depressed. Their anxious and uncertain. Theyre mean to themselves and to each ot...her. And for what gain? None. Trust us: Zero gain. We know its easy to fall down the rabbit hole and succumb to peer pressure and start hating on yourself and each other but please please please. ... Listen to Ruth. Your time is better spent. Your energy is better used. When we come together with curiosity and love, free from judgement and expectation, something really cool happens: we see value in the uniqueness of our peers. We learn lessons from each other. We are motivated by each other. We lift each other up. We coexist harmoniously. We are better together. Thank you, Ruth. For showing us whats possible and demanding we get after it. RIP #girlsaregonnarise #RBG @barbarichphoto

We made these high-waisted adventure leggings in collaboration with @bewildher, a Squamish-Bc-based sustainable, slow fashion apparel designer who believes so hard in our mission that she also donates $1 from every pair of her own legging designs sold to help fund our free confidence-building camps for struggling teenage girls. (check out their leggings on the @bewildher profile. So awesome. We want them all!) So theyre made locally, which matters to us. They use recycle pl...ates bottles, which matters to us. Theyre a female-owned small business, which matters to us. As a non-profit with a mission to support girls and teach them to love the crap outta themselves and each other, its important to us (deeply) that we walk the talk and support our peers and the environment while sticking to our values 100% of the time. All of the proceeds from our adventure leggings fund our camps. So theyre leggings made with love that also give back love. The best! #girlsaregonnarise

We encourage girls to write, to draw, to muse, to create, to doodle, to get whatever is in their heads and their hearts out from under the proverbial rug and onto paper. Why? Because its freeing. Because its light. Because demons are disempowered when you give them a voice. Because dreaming is a lost art and we wanna bring it back. Because we all have something to say and sometimes we self-muzzle and dont even know it. Because it just feels good sometimes to get it out. We think journaling is so so so important and therapeutic and necessary that we decided to make our own recycled journals and sell them to fund our free confidence-building camps for teenage girls. Get yours online! #girlsaregonnarise

It should be easy. Being ourselves should be easy. All this trying so damn hard to be someone we’re not is too much. It’s soul-crushing. The magic of humanity is in our unique differences. A whole bunch of people confidently being who they are wouldn’t that just be the most beautiful thing?... At camp, we agree on Day One that there is no judgement here. That all that shit you’re used to on social media and in the classroom doesn’t exist here. Everyone deserves to just be whoever they are without judgement and with acceptance. And as the days go on, an ease shows up. A quiet confidence with just letting go of expectation and just sinking in to the ease of self. Everyone looks light. There’s an air of contentment. No one is trying to hide. It’s a glorious undoing. And it’s our favourite kind of easy. Please please honour yourself and be who you are. We promise you, it should be easy being you. And the real you is the right you. #girlsaregonnarise @barbarichphoto

Hey, Im Kim. Im the founder of Girl In The Wild. I spent 3+ decades of my life in perpetual self-loathing. For 22 years I didnt wear a bathing suit even though I super love swimming because I thought showing my skin was a disservice to everyone at the beach. For 20 years I didnt wear shorts because what if someone saw my cellulite and then laughed about it and how ugly it was at dinner with their family later?... For 36 years, I pinched my stomach chubb and measured it with a ruler and recorded it on a calendardaily. For 11 years, I counted calories. Meticulously. For 27 years I weighed myself on a scale daily and marked a happy face or unhappy face on the calendar based on the number. There were a lot of unhappy faces. Id been so used to thinking I was all sorts of shitty things, that I couldnt see my light. I thought I was just destined to live in a grey cloud of not good enough. I was convinced for so very long that I was a series mistakes to fix. Too chubby. Too tall. Too meek. Too loud sometimes too. Too mumbly when I spoke. Too gummy when I smiled. Too ugly. Too weird. Too intelligent. Too slow. Too weak. Ugh. Not liking myself consumed me. Wishing I was someone else was my past time. Trying to look better was my full time job. And then, I found the mountains. I found Mother Nature. I found fresh air. Right here in wild spaces is where after those three long decades of perpetual self loathing, I discovered that I was, in fact, really strong, really smart, really reliable, really kind, really resourceful, really resilient, and a whole lotta other really good things. Yes! Girl In The Wild is a non-profit that provides free confidence-building experiences to teenage girls in wild spaces. Its our mission to help those who identify as girls to learn to love themselves. Its our vision to eradicate self-loathing for good. #girlsaregonnarise @barbarichphoto

Suns out. Buns up! We start every morning at camp with yoga as the sun rises. Which, for teenagers, is criminal at first. They really dont like being up before noon. If were honest. But they trudged to the yoga platform at 7:30 every morning anyway. Yawning. Eyes slitty. Kids heavy from just a few hours of sleep because they definitely stayed up way past lights out talking about all of the things. ... And then we bent. We folded. We breathed. We flowed forward and upward and outward. And we saluted the sun and the blue skies and our souls. A moment of peace. A slice of gratitude. And the moans and groans of early morning ritual transformed into deep breaths and the soft smiles of self care. #girlsaregonnarise @barbarichphoto

We bring a small gang of teenage girls who dont know each other into a remote alpine location and we spend a week unravelling pain, talking about struggle, being curious about one another, pushing physical and emotional limits, meditating under the stars, connecting deeply with ourselves and each other, and ultimately learning to love ourselves and each other. It is FREE for the girls. Because we believe that self confidence is a right that all who identify as female deserv...e to have. Forever. It costs approximately $300/day for each girl. We fund camp by selling rad Girl In The Wild apparel (check out our site!), by accepting donations (click Donate online. Were a registered non-profit.), by creating paid online curriculum for women with proceeds going toward camp fees for girls. (Stay tuned for meditation, grief, and self acceptance courses this fall). Were aiming to host three free camps next year and wed sure love your support to make it happen and to help us achieve our vision of eradicating self-loathing for good. #girlsaregonnarise

No lion left behind. It’s one of our mantras at camp. A little all for one and one for all kinda thing. We commit to helping each other without judgement and with love. Whoever is up helps whoever is down. No questions. And we hope this’ll stick with these girls as a way to move through life. Women helping women. Without question. ... #girlsaregonnarise @barbarichphoto

This conversation still matters. It forever matters. And were not apt to forget it. We also are not leading this conversation. We are, however, listening to it, learning from it, and taking a course of action in our own communities and lives and circles to be on the right side of history. We are committed to broadening our information silo (actually, just destroying the silo all together), to supporting the BIPOC community, to campaigning with our voice and our dollars, and... to standing up for what we believe even when its hard and maybe even unpopular. Because if a girl doesnt have her integrity, what does she have really? If we want to achieve our mission of helping all girls who identify as female to love the crap outta themselves and each other (and we do!!), then we need to keep listening. We need to keep having uncomfortable conversations. We need to change. These are some of the BLM, POC, and Indigenous leaders and resources we are learning from and leaning on to understand and unravel our own privilege: @ava @rachel.cargle @blackwomenradicals @decolonizemyself @austinchanningbrown @privtoprog @zebablay @indyamoore @blairmani @nicoleacardoza @iiycfamily @antiracismdaily @activismandstuff @moemotivate @yarashahidi @emmanuelacho @thewildsister @mspackyetti We invite you to follow these leaders. To listen and to learn. To share their wisdom. And, most importantly, to do the work to affect real change. Action matters. Give your time and your dollars. We also invite you to talk to us directly. We are constantly evolving and ever committed to improving. If you think we can be doing more or differently to eradicate self-loathing for all girls everywhere, we are open to your ideas and constructive criticism. We grow together. We improve together. We create lasting change together. Also, Breonna Taylors murderers have not been charged yet. Its important that we never stop talking. Demand justice for Breonna. She said: Im sorry. Im probably gonna take forever because Im scared. She said, Im probably going to scream a little. She said, you may not want to belay me because I am gonna take so long and probably get stuck. ... She was scared. A little tingly on the inside. And she showed up at that rock wall ready to try anyway. With all her courage and all her heart. And she did not take forever. And she did not scream. And she did not get stuck. She sent it. This is Ruby. She came to camp with us in 2019 and won our hearts over pretty quickly with her penchant for being curious about all the thingspeople, places, bugs, flora, everything. Ruby had a beautiful rising at camp. We loved bearing witness to her blossoming. She wrote a little bit about her experience at Girl In The Wild and we posted it on our blog. Check it out online! Her advice for girls thinking of applying for camp in 2021? Let these women teach you. Do not be a...fraid to teach the women in turn. Learn from one another. Be open. Dont worry: we dont let girls five head first into rocky alpine lakes. We do, however, encourage curiosity. And this curious cat is dunking her face under cold alpine waters to see what lives and thrives below. A curiosity about nature sparks environmental stewardship long after camp is over. The more girls learn about Mother Nature, the more they respect her and choose to make decisions to protect her. Fiercely. So we welcome questions. We support inquisition. We teach le...ave no trace. We connect with Mother Nature with gratitude and respect, and never anything less. And, again, we never ever dive head first into rocks. #girlsaregonnarise @barbarichphoto

Our founder, Kim, gets asked a lot How did you start Girl in the Wild? and the answer is simple: I said it out loud. She wanted to do something so she said she was going to do it and then she did it. Bam! There is something to be said for owning what you want. For getting after it even when youre unsure of it. Even when you dont have all the pieces figured out. Even when everyone else thinks youve lost your marbles. There is something to be said for just doing the thi...ng you said you were going to do. Because you want to. There will always be naysayers. And thats okay. You know what you can do. They dont. You do. You cant make the camps free. Youll go bankrupt, they said to Kim. She did make them free. And she still has a roof over her head. Youll never be able to afford the insurance alone, they said. She paid that bill first. And fundraised to pay the lodge, the helicopter, the food, the gear, the leaders, everything by selling tanks and leggings (like in this pic), spending her weekends at events, and speaking at conferences. What if nobody applies? They questioned. Girls from all over North America applied. So many that were implementing more camps so we can say Yes more and No less. Whatever you want to do, say it out loud. Give it a voice. Then get after it. And thank you to every soul who is supported our vision to eradicate self-loathing for good since the very first moment we said we were gonna do it in 2018. Were doing it. #girlsaregonnarise

When night fell and the skies turned pink and the world was just the quietest, we gathered round the table, curled up on the couches, layered up and hiked to see a sunset view, or cozied up under the starsand we talked. Openly. Without judgement. With only love. We talked about ourselves, our experiences, our struggles, our fears. We talked about love and mental health and dreams and self-imposed limits and anxiety and bullying, too. We talked about being misunderstood. We... talked about feeling sad and lonely and guilty and ashamed. And we talked about how grateful we arefor our bodies, our minds, our way of moving through the world, our differences, and for each other. It was like a nightly ritual of shedding skin. Peeling back a layer of pain to get closer and closer to letting our true selves shine. It was never easy to have these talks. It was hard to cry together. It was challenging to expose our innermost fears and demons. And it was beautiful. And necessary. It was pure love. #girlsaregonnarise @barbarichphoto

Just over here soaking up some rays in our foxy muscle tank, dreaming of camp next summer and changing the lives of struggling teenage girls forever. NBD. Were hoping to sell out of tanks and tees by December If we do, itll cover 25% of our 2021 camp costs. We paid for the shirts outta our own pockets. And were not getting the money back. (Because, uhm, eradicating self-loathing is more important). We had the design donated because our mission inspired. We have no pai...d employees because everyone has day jobs and gives love off the sides of their desks. So 100% of what you pay goes directly to fund our program. So its awesome in about a thousand ways. #girlsaregonnarise

We are pretty fierce in our conviction to help girls rise. Its what were here to do. Its why all of our programming online and outdoors for teenage girls is free. Its why when people said at our inception you know, parents would pay for that for their kids, we said dont care. Its free. Its why we get up early to do a few things before work and stay up late to crank out more curriculum after work. Its why our board meets after dinner. Girls deserve to rise. Th...ey have a right to feel good about themselves in mind, body, and soul. Confidence should be theirs for the takingno matter their pant size, race, religion, socioeconomic status, geographic location, height, hair colour and style, hobbies, interests, sexual preference, intellect, number of friends, ability, anything. Confidence should be theirs. Period. Girls are gonna rise. We are committed to giving them the tools and resources, love and light, experiences and mentor ship to help them do it. A whole bunch of phoenixes ready to take flight. It is the coolest thing. You can help us make this happen by donating online or purchasing some of our GITW apparel and accessories. All of which fund our free confidence boosting programming for teenagers who identify as girls. #girlsaregonnarise

A year ago today, we had all just arrived back from camp. Full. Renewed. Lit up. Jenna was 15 at the time and she wrote a little something about her experience with us. I was able to spend a whole week anxiety-free. I wasnt worried about what the other girls thought of me and for the first time in the longest time I could be my 100% true authentic self. It was a pure feeling of self worth and happiness, which is a word that I dont get to use very often.... Read more of her words on our blog online. This girl. That week. Oh, what a week! #girlsaregonnarise

Its all unfolding the way its supposed to unfold. We can tell you from experience that the deepest darkest moments in our lives, where we thought this is the worst!, were actually pivot points that shifted us toward greater, brighter things. Every. Single. Time.... We tried to fight it. We tried to ignore it. We tried to run the other way. But we dont get to control the flow, friends. So now we trust it. We surrender to it. We believe that every experience were going through is merely just an opportunity to help us learn more about ourselves, to peel back another layer, and reveal our true selves. Maybe thats a little woo-woo. Were not sure. But its also true. Control doesnt serve us. Surrender does. And so were just letting it flow. #girlsaregonnarise

Morning dew and a mountaintop meditation. We greet every day at camp with sunrise yoga. A gentle flow to welcome ourselves to a new day and give our bodies and minds the space and love to show up presently. For the girls, its a new practice and one that doesnt come easily. Theyre not used to trekking up a mountain at 7am, swatting at black flies, yawning the last bits of their late night out. But they do it. We do it. Some mornings the flow comes easy and theyre gratefu...l theyre there. Some mornings the flow is impossible to find, and child pose is the only reprieve. And thats just fine. You see, we dont do this to make yogi masters outta the girls. Heck, if youve seen our downward dog youd know were very very very far from mastering the flow ourselves. Theres a lot of grunting some days. We introduce yoga and meditation into our days because its different, because sometimes its hard, because pausing and being slow and intentionally breathing in and out is a rare occurrence in regular teenage life. And its so so so so important. The quiet is as important as the hustle. The pause is as important as the push. The inner strength is as important to nurture as the outer strength. Because life is an ebb and flow of all the things. So we flow too. Our popular free online girls meditation course and paid womens meditation course (which funds our free girls programming) are coming back again in the fall. Sign up to our newsletter for dates and times (coming soon). In the meantime, take a meaningful breath. Even just one. You deserve it. #girlsaregonnarise

Sometimes its a win to just get out of bed. Its a win to take a deep breath before responding this time. Its a win to push forward just a little bit more. Its also a win to step back and take pause. Its a win to say No. its a win to say Yes. Its a win to admit that I just dont fucking know right now. Its a win to be neutral today about food or body or life or anything. Its a win to cry it out for a little while. Its a win to feel your feelings and be mad or sad or i...ndifferent. Its a win to just exist and try another day to find your way in this wild world. Sure, we all love a trophy and a gold medal and a raise and a Congratulations banner and a cake with our names on it and all of the hullabaloo that sure sounds traditional success. But its the little wins, the micro-achievements, that truly move us forward. You are winning. Even if you dont feel like celebrating. Even if theres no confetti. You are winning. #girlsaregonnarise

Girl In The Wild 22.09.2019

Weve learned a lot from the young women weve mentored at camp. Incredible lessons in overcoming adversity and the impossible resilience of a human with only 16 years on the planet. Weve also learned some hard truths about the experiences of teenage girls today. Especially online. Fake accounts created for the purpose of bullying. This broke our hearts. It made us mad. Because its mean. It cannot be justified in any circumstance. It is not reflective of the love and power... of girls to help each other rise. And girlsare better than this. If you have created a fake account to bully someone, we invite you to talk to us. Because this is not your true nature. And its something that will not bring you pride. Hurting other people on purpose is horrendous. And youre probably doing it because you are hurt. We want you to know that sometimes good people do mean things sometimes but the silver lining is that you can stop and you can change and you can be someone else tomorrow if youd like. And we have shoulders and ears for miles to listen to you talk and share your secrets and help guide you forward. Delete the fake account and message us. This is a positive step you can be proud of. If youre being bullied online, block that account first. You get to choose what information and messages you see and digest and take in. You do not have to take shit from anyone. Your value is not determined by a bullys words; it is determined by yours. And when we subject ourselves to mean things because we think so low of ourselves, we start to believe that those mean things are true. They are not. They are never true. Its bullshit to the max. If you are being bullied, please message us. For you, we have ears to listen, shoulders to give your pain to, a friend to guide you through. No judgement. All love. Girls, the only way we rise is together. We know its hard to admit mistakes. We know its terrifying to admit youre struggling. We know that kids can be really fucking mean. But not you. You are a bright light. Whether youre the bully or the bullied right now. You Are A Bright Light. And we are here for you when youre ready to shine.

On these warm summer nights, when everything is still, and the air is the kinda hot you can chew, we write. About love and the world and our deepest darkest secrets. We put pen to page and we write. About loss and courage, joy and pain. We write about whats hard and whats joyful, whats been and whats to come. We write because when it leaves our hearts and our brains, were lighter. Were brighter. Were free from the heavy. Our secrets dont haunt us. We can move forwar...d. Free birds. Journaling is an important part of our camp experience. So much so that we made our own recycled journals and we sell them on our website to fund our free confidence-building camps for teenage girls. #girlsaregonnarise
