As we close out #GirlsIncWeek, let's remember most youth and parents say girls need more comprehensive information relevant to their lives. After all, children learn about sexuality every day of their lives. They learn from their friends, TV, movies, videos, music, you, and society in general.... #ComprehensiveSexEd assists girls in understanding sexuality with a positive, empowered approach built on accurate information, cultural sensitivity, inclusiveness, and respect. Cheers to that! #strongsmartbold #rmwb #ymm #fortmcmurray

A message from Executive Director, Nanase Tonda recognizing #GirlsIncWeek: "We at Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta are proud to highlight the work we do with girls in the area of healthy sexuality. We focus on addressing healthy relationships (both inter-personally and between personal mind, body + soul), and creating a safe, judgement-free environment where girls feel supported to break stigma around so-called sensitive topics, such as menstruation, feeling/body/identity change and sexuality. We believe it’s important to educate girls around #ComprehensiveSexEd because it builds knowledge, skills and voice necessary for girls to prevent sexual harassment and gender-based violence of various forms. Respect starts young."
When girls are provided the right opportunities and supports, they create positive changes in their lives and in the world around them. Watch how we’re helping girls grow up STRONG, smart, and bold. Spring programming starts April 19! Register here: https://forms.gle/jAHsM3yeHiK46Ep48
When it comes to #ComprehensiveSexEd, the role parents and caregivers play as primary educators of young people cannot be emphasized enough. With their support, girls are better equipped to talk comfortably about bodies, feelings, and identity. Remember, you don’t have to be an expert or completely at ease with the topic of sexuality to do a good job of educating your children about sex.... #GirlsIncWeek

Sexuality is a natural aspect of being human and of human growth and development. When we hear #ComprehensiveSexEd let’s be on the same page about what it means and so we uphold a girl’s right to learn and not send the message that raising the subject of sexuality is taboo. We believe at every stage of their development, all girls should have access to age-appropriate information about the physical, psychological, and social aspects of sexuality.... #GirlsIncWeek

We are often reminded of the importance of 'girl-only' spaces through our programming. Last night, we discussed periods and feminine hygiene. Participants had a number of questions that we could answer in a safe and inclusive environment. All participants also got their own period pack-- pads, tampons & chocolate!
