Giulianna's Music School 08.06.2021

Prior to 2020, I experienced online teaching through a music school I previously worked for. They offered online lessons over Skype in the event that students missed their in-person lesson. One main challenge I experienced with virtual lessons at the time was the poor quality of video and sound that limited virtual teaching capabilities. At the beginning of March 2020 I completely switched to online teaching due to the pandemic. The number of students that were enrolled for l...Continue reading

Over my 9 years of teaching voice and piano to people of all ages, I confess at some points I developed a favouritism towards teaching certain age groups. A few years ago, I believed that teaching voice to anyone below the age of 10 was not possible. I felt that they simply were not ready for the voice training I was accustomed to. It turns out I was right, students under the age of 10 are not ready for the type of voice training I was accustomed to, but it didn’t mean that t...hey couldn’t benefit from voice training at all. Instead, it meant that the lesson structure, core curriculum, and my perspective on what voice training was needed to change. One of my big influences has been my experience with a program called Music Together. For those of you not familiar with Music together, it is a curriculum that is entirely song-based for children ages 0-5. Regular classes are around 45 minutes long, and include both children and parents. During the 45 minutes, lesson content includes 12-14 different songs that vary in meter, key, style, and even language. The interesting part about the classes is that there is never a time where a lesson book is used, or a concept explanation takes place. The entire class is done and practiced through the art of repetition and audiation. The songs are created specifically for this program and it is truly an amazing experience to be involved in. From my experience with music together and my personal voice training, the last couple of years has shaped my view around the importance of music learning at a young age. Music training goes way beyond just practicing for hours a day to get better at your respective instrument. For some of us, like myself, improving our skill sets is one of our goals, but for a lot of people they experience so much more. One important thing I realized is that young children love to sing, so why would we want to hinder that love for music by saying they are simply too young? I now encourage students of any age to get involved with singing in any way they can. It is a chance for children to discover their voice, explore their love for music, and have fun with an instrument they were born with! There are so many amazing resources like The Full Voice workbook series that encourage voice lessons for young children. My lessons now include tons of games, physical activity, fun music, and so much more! Check out this article that highlights the author of The Full Voice and her love for teaching young voice students. https://www.nats.org//InterNos_Fall2017_Teaching_Very_Youn
