Weighing just 19 lbs at 10 years old, Hassan Merzam Muhammad is so emaciated by the severe malnourishment plaguing hundreds of thousands of Yemeni children like him that he can no longer walk. Fears of famine in Yemen are resurfacing, the United Nations says. A U.N. report Wednesday said Yemen was returning to "alarming" levels of food insecurity.... "We're thirsty, we can't even get water," said Zaina Muhammad, mother to Hassan and his six siblings. Famine has never been officially declared in Yemen but U.N. warnings in late 2018 of impending famine prompted an aid ramp-up after which the World Food Programme fed up to 13 million a month. Displaced five times by war, Hassan's family now live in rural Hajjah, one of the poorest regions, with no income. Nurse Makieh al-Aslami, where Hassain is being treated says "Hassan has no health problems. His problem is hunger." The number of malnourished under-fives could rise by 20% to 2.4 million by year end on funding shortfalls, UNICEF has said. A Saudi-led coalition intervened in Yemen in March 2015 to restore the Yemeni government ousted from power in the capital Sanaa by the Iran-aligned Houthis. Now 80% of the population relies on humanitarian aid. You can help here: https://secure.wfpusa.org//save-lives-giving-food-today-do

785 million people live without clean water. That’s nearly 1 in 10 people worldwide, or, twice the population of the United States without access to life’s most basic human need. The majority live in isolated rural areas and spend hours every day walking to collect water for their family. Not only does walking for water keep kids out of school and take up time that parents could be using to earn money, but the water often carries diseases that make them sick. When a community... gets access to clean water, it can change just about everything. It can improve health, increase access to food, grow local economies, and help kids spend more time in school. The water crisis is huge, but it is solvable. Charity: Water works with local experts and community members to find the best sustainable solution in each place where they work, whether it’s a well, a piped system, a BioSand Filter, or a system for harvesting rainwater. And with every water point they fund, their partners coordinate sanitation and hygiene training and establish a local Water Committee to help keep water flowing for years to come. http://charitywater.com/spring Like our page for more inspiring stories
