A Hope full start to 2021! In late 2019 I got hooked on the Discovery Channel Canada reality series Highway Thru Hell, a show about heavy rovery tow-truck operators and their efforts to keep things moving in one of the most dangerous winter driving areas in Canada. It also made we want to see BC. So naturally when I decided to move here, the town of Hope (where the show is based out of) was high on my list of "must sees". However, it had to wait back in May as I was just a...nxious to get settled. So January 1st 2020 was the day I did the less than 2 hour drive to visit this quaint little town on the Fraser River. Another fun fact: First Blood was filmed here in 1982, and you can find a self-guided tour of all of the film locations they used After driving a few kilometers on the Coquihalla, I can see why it would be the Highway Thru Hell I'm just grateful it wasn't snowing. Another fun trip to White Rock Pier, albeit a little smokey. This time it was to meet up with a friend I haven't seen since 1998 in Muskoka, Ontario. Great to see you again Laura Taylor! I remembered to take a picture of the white rock The 486 ton rock used to be white with bird shit, now they paint it.... Legend has it that the huge giant rock that the city was named after is actually from the Cowichan tribe. The Chief’s daughter was in love with the son of the sea god, but they could not wed because a mixture of mortals and gods was frowned upon. What was a guy to do? In his anger, he raised a giant white rock and hurled it down over the gulf, claiming that wherever it landed would be their new home. The visual juxtaposition In 1956 a train going excessively fast derailed and plunged several boxcars into a rock cut canyon where the river flowed. A local logging company managed to use heavy equipment to remove the boxcars from the canyon, but could not remove them from the forest. The trees have grown tall and local artists have (illegally) created some truly amazing work! It's a short hike, very busy on weekends. Happy Labor Day! This weekend always signifies change for me. Back to school with new runners and jeans. Cooler weather and fall colors.
