Global K-Culture Club 23.04.2021

Hey Samgyeoppals! Monday, March 15 @ 3-5PM come join the GKCC at USask's Global Village~ Along with learning some Tae Kwon Do and listening to a traditional music performance you can also learn the extremely fun and addictive dance to: Naughty Boy by Pentagon! Check out what you could learn in their fun Music Video ^_^... Did you notice all the frogs? That's a lot of frogs. It's because they are actually singing "~" (cheong Gaeguri~) which means "Green Frog." But why is the song called Naughty Boy? That's because in Korea there is a famous fable about a Green Frog who never listens to this mother and only does the opposite of what she says. Pretty naughty if you ask me. When you call someone a "Green Frog" in Korean, you are actually calling them a "Naughty Boy." Join us on the 15th for more fun facts like this! See you there~

Tomorrow is Seollal! Remember you can get 10% off EVERYTHING at JusFruit if you mention the GKCC when you order by phone or in-store ^_^ You can even get a special order of Tteokguk (rice cake soup) to eat during Charye! (You can learn more about that tomorrow if you order~) When the meal is over, it is Seollal tradition to exchange New Year’s wishes and blessings for good health and fortune (see our New Year’s Greeting post to learn about this). Young family members will al...so present gifts to elders and perform (Sebae). Sebae is a special New Year’s Bow with very particular rules that differ between male and female. Even details about which foot crosses over the other is important! To learn how to Sebae, you can watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0vkgV1DLMw After a successful Sebae, elders will give out (Sebaedon) or literally, New Year’s bow money. When the young family members receive Sebaedon, they usually put it into (Bokjoomeoni), their fortune pocket, which is a drawstring silk or cotton pouch, sometimes embroidered with various lucky symbols that are believed to bring good fortune. Perhaps you will see chrysanthemums, or the Chinese characters (Life), (Luck), (Wealth), (Nobility). You may even see some plants and animals from the 10 traditional symbols of longevity. Check them out in the pictures below!
