Unmasking the Reality of Lung Cancer A lung cancer diagnosis carries a stigma that no other cancer does: you must have been a smoker, you brought this on yourself. For one out of five lung cancer patients, however, this isn’t the case. Non-smokers that develop lung cancer are on average younger and predominantly women, and we don’t know why. Unlike breast cancer, there are no identified heritable mutations that predispose one for lung cancer.... Tragically, despite lung cancer causing more cancer death in men and women than the next three cancers combined, lung cancer research is significantly underfunded compared to those others. Are people less willing to donate to fund research into a disease they believe is self-inflicted? If so, we need to change this perspective. The fact is, if you have lungs you can get lung cancer.
