Glarea School 02.06.2021

If Glarea were a person, it would have an open mind and a playful, flexible approach to learning. Glarea is the kind of place where kids won’t get lost amongst the other students or hide in the back of the room. It’s a school where instructors will, when appropriate, go a bit off script, get creative, and be different with their teaching approach. A school where all members collaborate to use their curiosities and explore their talents. When asked, Where are the classrooms? our Founding Head Rita Rai answers, They’re everywhere. We will be expanding into Grade 6 in September 2021 and we’re now accepting applications for K to Grade 6! We offer a wide variety of Musical Theatre classes at Glarea, providing our students with a welcoming and safe environment to nurture creativity from a spark into a toolbox of life skills. We see how musical theatre harmonies foster teamwork, how learning to project your voice builds self-confidence, and how leadership can be shaped early on in the director’s chair. Technology is everywhere, and Media Arts classes give artists a way to connect and investigate fundamental visual concepts but use new media to drive discoveries, knowledge, and applications. Students are given the chance to develop important skills like critical thinking, communication, and innovation so they can go on to engage with their world in original ways. We will be expanding into Grade 6 in September 2021 and we’re accepting applications for all grades K to Grade 6! It’s hard to believe that it was only just eight months ago that we made Excellent Ice our home. We officially opened our doors in September and we’ve been growing, improving and evolving ever since. Since day one, our main goal has been to reimagine the modern school system by utilizing Challenge Based Learning within an all-inclusive Arts and Sport environment focused on connection and development. As we continue on with this school year, we remain dedicated to our philosophy. In preparation for our expansion into Grade 6 in September 2021, we are now accepting applications for all grades K to Grade 6! Continued from yesterday’s Glarea Escape Room Grand Opening press release: As the K/1’s walked into the room, they were greeted by evil laughter! All of a sudden, a figure leapt out of the backroom and flicked a switch that turned on bubbling lava. The students completed a variety of challenges which included Math Mandarin Mazes... Quizzes Puzzles Parkour, and more! Eventually, the students stood in front of a barred-off door that bore a Keep Out sign. The students then had to burst through the door, and found themselves in the Robbers lab, filled with lava samples, and stolen goods, that included paintings, valuables, and, of course, hats! The Robbers made an attempt to stop the K/1s, but didn’t succeed. Finally, the K/1s reached a locker with a lock on it. They used the key they had found previously to unlock it and found inside the Magical Blue Hat. They had done it. Let the celebration begin!

On January 19th, our Grade 5 class created our first escape room! The images and following are excerpts from their Grand Opening press release: Tyler patiently waits at the check-in desk for his fellow students to hand over their Glarea currency which was discovered in their classroom! Avani and Tanvir purchased their entry tickets and readied themselves to enter the lava room, filled to the brim with challenges. The theme was to find a magic, talking hat, stolen by Robbie and Mitraz, also known as The Robbers''. Let the games begin!

Although living and dealing with the pandemic has become the new norm it’s crucial that we don’t let our guard down - especially now that winter is upon us and we will be spending an increasing amount of time indoors. At Glarea, we have prepared for this. The health and safety of our community is paramount and we have left no stone unturned in creating a safe, productive, and unrestricted learning environment for our students and team. We have worked very hard with our faculty, health advisors and engineers to create a system of learning that works seamlessly between at-home and in-class while mitigating COVID and contagion risk. We still have spots available for the remainder of this school year. Register for a private, safe-distanced tour: http://bit.ly/32z87cG.

Back in 2006, Canadian veteran Trevor Greene removed his helmet as a sign of respect for a group of elders in Afghanistan. Moments after he was attacked by a young man with an axe and suffered a very serious brain injury. Since then, Greene has been on the slow mend. However, his treatment has recently plateaued and similar to so many other Canadian veterans, he suffers from PTSD. Dr. Ryan D’Arcy, one of our advisors at Glarea, has watched closely as Greene makes gains from h...is daily physical rehabilitation. Yet, D’Arcy said that the bridge between the soldier’s mind and body was still a vast expanse that needed a better connection. That’s where a Portable Neuromodulation Stimulator, or PoNS, comes in. It’s a small device that fits inside Greene’s mouth that pushes the limits of recovery in physical abilities, cognitive processing and PTSD symptoms. "We don’t know yet exactly how it does this," said D’Arcy. "But it facilitates neuroplasticity, or your brain’s innate ability to rewire itself." Dr. Bonnie Henry announced yesterday that since November 21st, British Columbia has seen a significant increase in COVID activity province-wide. We’re in a very challenging time of the COVID-19 pandemic and we are asking for everyone’s help to slow the spread of the virus in our province, Dr. Henry says. As we have seen, this virus doesn’t pause when we are tired and doesn’t wait for us to catch up. This means that right now, we all need to slow down our social interaction...s and increase our layers of protection to get over this next hurdle together. At Glarea, we’re in this together. In every detail of our new home at Excellent Ice, we have prioritized the health and safety of our community. Reduced class sizes, connectivity to school equipment from home, increased hand-washing, trough sinks and sanitization stations at school entry and in all classrooms, and physical distancing are a few contagion mitigation efforts that we have adopted. Together we can stay safe and healthy. We still have spots available for the remainder of this school year. Register for a private, safe-distanced tour: http://bit.ly/32z87cG.

As we carry on into the winter months, health officials are providing updates on the coronavirus in B.C. Last Thursday, Dr. Bonnie Henry announced the new mask mandate and temporary social lockdown for the province. "We are in our second surge, and it has proved to be a challenge," she said. "I know we will get through this, but we need to take more action now." At Glarea, our COVID Safety plan has been carefully designed and implemented to preserve the safety and health of o...ur students, staff, and community. Contagion risk mitigation has been implemented in every detail of our new school from the design & construction of our facility to the policy and procedures of day-to-day operations. Our Educational Continuity program provides a seamless option for your child to learn at-home, should they choose. Dr. Henry is expected to make a follow up announcement today. It’s no secret that winter is upon us! As temperatures continue to drop, be sure that your child comes to school prepared for the cold. Depending on the weather, this may mean a rain jacket, snow jacket, insulated layers, hats, mittens, and any other clothing item that will keep your child warm and comfortable during the school day. Dressing for the weather is important - make sure that your child is prepared for variable temperatures when they come to school. We are excited to enter this new season and continue to give our Glareans the tools they need to identify and pursue their unique purpose. We still have spots available for this school year! Our Kick-Boxing Expert, Mostafa Sabeti, was named head coach and manager of the Canadian Wushu National Team just over a year ago, and has recently been named the President of Wushu BC. Wushu originated in China and is the official name of kung fu and one of the most popular forms of martial arts. We have lots of potential with athletes here in B.C., we just need some (direction) and some more organization, Sabeti shared. Mostafa started training in martial arts at the age ...of ten in Iran. He began with Karate, then expanded to Kung Fu, and Seido Kay Kan Karate. His accomplishments on the international stage are extensive and include 2002 World Champion and best technical fighter of the tournament, and three time International champion; 2001, 2002 and 2005. What does our Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) Approach entail? CBL is an educational framework for learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics as access points for guiding student enquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. This means that although it is difficult to foresee and teach topics of the future, we are able to give our students the essential tools to become lifelong learners who adapt, seek knowledge, and continuously develop an understanding of all new things that come their way.
