Meet the Artist Virginia Wilson Toccalino's passion with glass began about 1984 when she began making stained glass panels and lamps. Her interest evolved into stage sandblasting techniques to decorate glass. A desire to enhance her skills by learning to cut and engrave crystal led her to a class at the Sheridan College. While there she was captivated by the glassblowing studio which led her to enroll in the 3 year glass program. Her infatuation with the Venetian glass maki...ng techniques in her creation of filigrana and murrini glass rods have led her to combine furnace working techniques with lamp working, resulting in the creation of her uniquely styled complex murrini and very detailed blown and cut, art glass beads and blown objects. She has received many awards, scholarships and grants for her work. Virginia’s glass has been exhibited widely in both juried and invitation only exhibitions across Canada and the United States. Her work is represented in private and public collections throughout North America and abroad. Most notably, selections of her work are housed at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Toronto, Canada and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. Meet the Artist Skytree Smith: Molten glass has a mind of its own. It knows exactly what it wants to do fall to the ground. It has a very focused determination for that! If I can control that, then glass becomes the most versatile and unique medium I’ve ever worked with. I love being in the hot shop; it’s where I feel the most at peace and I can be mesmerised by the glow and growl of the glory hole. To start with something as basic as molten glass, unruly as it can be, and finish with a beautiful form or vessel still inspires awe. It’s ironic that for me, the finished product is often a tactile experience, but while forming that product my hands never actually touch it. Meet the Artist Carol Nesbitt is a glass design artist who creates original and functional designs, along with one-of-a-kind sculptural pieces. Her pieces continue to be inspired by nature and the beauty that surrounds us every day. Carol loves the fluidity of glass and the endless possibilities this material possesses. Her appreciation of glass comes out intuitively during the "hot process" when she creates a variety of organic forms, patterns and colours. Surface texture an...d interior optics are given special attention with each piece she produces. Carol studied glassblowing at Sheridan College's School of Craft and Design, followed by a one-year independent study program. Her work has been shown in exhibitions and galleries across Canada and the U.S.A., and in private collections in London, Ireland, U.S.A. and Canada. Carol is the recipient of such awards as the 1994 Oakville Arts Council Mayor's Awards, and an Ontario Art Council grant awarded through juried selection in 1996 See more
