I have carved a lot of panels over the years. They are typically 2" thick or under, mostly flat and sometimes tapered down at the edge. It can be difficult to get a panel to stand out, so when I get a creative idea, I feel it's important to take on the challenge. This killer whale is 4" thick by 38" round. It is literally more sculpture than it is panel. This panel took thought. It wasn't until it was fully shaped out that I could be certain I could finish it. If I jumped... the gun on certain steps I could have messed it up, particularly the tail. I pierced it throughout, had numerous level changes and gave it alot of 3D elements. It was fun to carve and is fun to look at. It definitely felt like an accomplishment and I can honestly say I have never seen one like it. This piece is on display at Lattimer gallery.

My first steering paddle and also my first octopus on a paddle. I don't recall exactly how tall it is but it's pretty tall. It was time consuming but I really enjoyed carving this piece. I placed this one in the Steinbrueck gallery paddle exhibit.

Everything about this piece is inspired by old headresses. I really wanted to learn the shape and layout that they used during theses different eras. Of course this is a rattle so I decided to hollow out the back of the head for the rocks and then hollowed the front section so I could pierce through the nostrils and in between the teeth. I had to think two steps ahead in order to not mess it up. I really like this rattle I have never seen one that is pierced like this. This piece is currently available for 3800.00.

Learning how to make knives is one of the best decisions I have made as an artist. Being able to make my own specific tools when I need them is a huge plus. I have learned how to work with numerous different tool steels, sharpening, hardening, tempering over the last 20 years. My knives are ugly buy they make countless beautiful cuts. A lot of carvers talk about that old knife they used to have and how they haven't seen one since. Sometimes I try to recreate it for them but ...it's never the same. As a tear wells up in their eye, I tell them they need to let it go and move on. These tools are a huge part of the magic that goes into a finished piece. I might keep this one.

I decided to do some copper inlay on this one. The S forms in particular were fun because they had to be shaped to match the contour of the whales body. I really like the contrast of black yellow cedar and copper.

I recently finished this octopus rattle and I am very happy with the outcome. It was quite a challenging piece and was actually my second attempt (the first one didn't work out). Alot of thought and planning went into making it work and I can honestly say I have never seen one like it. There are some pieces that I get excited about and this was definitely one of them.

Humminhbird paddle. This one is 7" wide which gave me some more freedom while designing the blade. I know its not typical but I gave it some level changes. I tried to carve lines to seperate the beak, wings, and tail but I couldn't bring myself to do it. I had to give it some level change.

This idea (thunderbird and killerwhale miniature pole) came to me and I knew it would be a time consuming piece. It may look like the wings were glued on but it is carved from a 44 and is one piece of wood. It is an example of my style from 8 or 9 years ago. It is 12 inches tall. I may do another one but much larger and with some modifications of course.

I typically carve yellow cedar but I bought a beautiful piece of red cedar and made this paddle. I couldn't bring myself to paint it.
