It's #GivingTuesdayCA! Today, charities across the world are celebrating #GivingTuesday as a global day of giving and volunteerism in support of their communities. We take this oppor...tunity to thank our over 100 philanthropic partnersincluding foundations and auxiliarieswho make significant contributions to our healthcare system. With donor support, these organizations fund important enhancements such as equipment, programs, research and education in support of patients and their families. A few of their recent contributions have included funding for COVID-19 research studies and laboratory technology, renovations to long term care and palliative care spaces, equipment for maternity, surgery, palliative care and diagnostic imaging, tablets and a virtual visitation program for seniors, and patient comfort items to name a few. Thank you again to our partners and their donors for the remarkable support they provide to enhance care for Albertans. To learn more about their work, visit ahs.ca/give.

This 3D printer is the only one in Canada printing specialized parts for prosthetics. It custom designs each piece to perfectly fit the person who will use it, ...making their prosthetic more comfortable and helping them get back to doing what they love. Our donors made this possible - THANK YOU! Want to learn more about the impact when you donate to the Glenrose Foundation? https://www.glenrosefoundation.com/impact/

Every day is just like a new set of nerves, says Charlene Giselbrecht, a registered nurse in the Emergency Department, Royal Alexandra Hospital. We’re short... staffed because nurses and staff are off because their families are sick or they’re sick. Giselbrecht says we all have a role to play if we want life to return to normal. If we do those little things, keeping distance, reducing cohorts, we can prevent a lot.

Today is #OrangeShirtDay. For Geraldine Potts, Orange Shirt Day is a reminder that Indigenous Canadians are decolonizing and recovering our lives from the dama...ge done in our past. Her own parents, now deceased, both attended residential schools. And in our family of 10 children, five of us attended the Indian Day Schools on the reserve, Potts says. Although we were allowed to go home after school, the damage done at those schools was horrendous. She is now a mental health and addictions cultural helper with AHS, providing support to Indigenous patients and families at the Indigenous Wellness Clinic and various hospitals in Edmonton and surrounding area. She encourages people to think about what Orange Shirt Day means and to recognize the experiences of residential school survivors, every day of the year. Don’t just wear your orange shirt for one day. Really do something to enact change in a positive way: smile, say hello, ask people how they are doing, or support people who are doing something to better themselves, she says. Support struggling parents who are trying to raise their children in an urban setting. Support and advocate for the rights of Indigenous people and stand up to racism and discrimination. It only takes one person to make change happen.

Tomorrow is Orange Shirt Day. Wearing an Orange Shirt is meant to recognize the harm done to residential school students, and show a commitment to the principl...e that every child matters. When Nadine McRee thinks of Orange Shirt Day, her kokum immediately comes to mind. She spent 13 years in residential school, but she could always find the good in life, McRee says about her grandmother, who passed away last year just two weeks short of her 100th birthday. I like to take the day to reflect on what she must have gone through, and what so many of our Indigenous peoples went through at residential schools. I give thanks for the resilience many of our Indigenous peoples still exhibit. McRee is the project director for the new AHS Provincial Indigenous Health Hub. A member of the Saddle Lake Cree Nation in the North Zone, she worked for many years on the Tallcree First Nation in Northern Alberta, and she still maintains many of the friendships that she created there. Being in the community really opens your eyes to all the additional challenges and barriers many of our Indigenous peoples experience daily, she says. I may be living in Edmonton now, but I still think of the youth there and the extra challenges that they have in front of them. How can I make things better? How can I improve health outcomes for our people? We need to make some major changes. It’s something she likes to discuss with all Albertans. How many First Nations or Metis Settlements have you been to? Within an hour of pretty much everywhere in this province, there’s an Indigenous community, McRee says. Get to know our people. You could use Orange Shirt Day as an opportunity to further your learning and experience our beautiful cultures.

As Alberta moves forward with its relaunch strategy, AHS will be reinstating parking fees as part of its return to normal business. Parking fees will be reinstated for employees on August 31 and for the public on September 1. Parking fees help AHS control the flow of traffic and ensure appropriate parking spaces are available for staff and visitors, keeping our facilities accessible as traffic again increases. As part of routine Infection Prevention and Control measures, AH...S Parking Services will continue to regularly clean all parking payment machines. We also encourage the use of the AHS Parking app, which can be downloaded for free to any iPhone or android device. https://bit.ly/3kKGZQH Accessible parking is part of a high-quality care experience. No healthcare funding or tax dollars are used in the construction or maintenance of most AHS parkades. Parking fees are therefore required to allow us to maintain safe and accessible parking, while ensuring healthcare dollars are focused on providing the best patient care possible. We recognize that paying for parking can add stress & financial burden on staff, visitors & guests. As such, AHS does provide compassionate parking passes to patients or families facing financial hardship. See more

In 2017, Corinne Huedepohl, a nurse practitioner (NP) with the Tone Management Service for Children at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital became the first NP in her field across Canada to receive privileges to independently inject botulinum toxin, more commonly known as Botox, for children under anesthesia in an operating room. Her expanded NP role helped her place second in Hospital News’ 2020 Nursing Hero Awards, which recognizes nurses across the country for going above and beyond for their patients, and in Corinne’s case, for her profession.

Front-line healthcare providers from across the province come together to share with Albertans a simple message: Thank you for all you’ve done to slow the sprea...d of COVID-19 in Alberta and please keep it up. Even as the province enters Stage 2 of relaunch, the health risk posed by the pandemic has not gone away. COVID-19 is still circulating in Alberta, so healthcare providers remind Albertans that physical distancing and other public health guidelines are still in effect and urge everyone to follow them to keep themselves and others safe. So on June 10, AHS teams and community partners decorated their vehicles and paraded through AHS sites across the city (including the Glenrose) in a Pride Drive, celebrated by hundreds of onlookers.
