A little potty lesson for next time you travel to Japan when COVID-19 is over Culture: Toilets in Japan Who would have thought that even toilets could be a cultural experience? Many first-time visitors to Japan find themselves a little confused on their first trip to the bathroom. Here are the two main types of toilet that you’ll find in Japan.... What Are All These Buttons? Modern Japanese toilets are called washlets or bidets. You’ll notice a console of buttons on the side of the bowl or on the wall next to the toilet. Of course, every brand is different but the most common functions are: A nozzle spraying warm water A button playing sounds to mask any unwanted bodily noises A stop button More advanced models can have features like deodorizers, dryers, and automatic lids. Almost all of the modern toilets in homes and public areas will have heated seats. You’ll especially appreciate this added touch if you travel to Japan in the wintertime! Japanese-Style Toilets On the complete opposite end of the spectrum to the high-tech toilets, we have the Japanese-style squat toilets. Although Western-style toilets are becoming more widely-used, squat toilets are still common in public areas like train stations. Japanese-style toilets look like a small urinal set into the floor. To use these toilets (as the name suggests) simply squat over them facing the side with the hood. Where Is the Flush? Different toilets will have different methods to flush. Some will be quite obvious, like a metal lever to pull or twist, while others may be a bit of a mystery! You might find a sensor or button on the wall above the toilet, near the bidet console, or even on top of the toilet roll holder. Some toilets have colored flush buttons labeled (nagasu) flush, while others might simply have (sh) small for a smaller flush and (dai) large for a larger flush. You may even find all you need to do is stand up to trigger an automatic flush!

The Canadian province of Alberta has announced new immigration pathways for international student entrepreneurs as part of a plan to diversify the economy and c...reate more businesses and jobs in the local economy. The government of Alberta said the new streams would support the recovery of the province’s economy by attracting international job creators and skilled professionals. International graduates from universities and colleges in Alberta can now apply to the new International Graduate Entrepreneur Immigration Stream to launch business ventures and startups the province. And in January 2021, Alberta will open the Foreign Graduate Start-Up Visa Stream to attact international graduates from US universities and colleges to start businesses and settle in Alberta communities. Doug Schweitzer, Minister of Jobs, Economy and Innovation in Alberta, said, We want the best and brightest talent from around the world to come to Alberta. We’ve heard loud and clear from our technology sector that access to skilled workers has been a challenge. This announcement is a big step towards addressing this talent gap, encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit of newcomers, and helping grow the companies that will diversify our economy. We are taking bold actions and delivering on our commitment to attract newcomers who will start businesses, invest, and create jobs for Albertans. These actions will help strengthen our economy and let us take advantage of untapped talent by making it easier for international graduates to put their ideas to work here in Alberta, said Jason Copping, Minister of Labour and Immigration. Joseph Doucet, Dean of the University of Alberta School of Business, commented, Attracting globally competitive talent is one of the keys to Alberta's ability to continue to grow Alberta's tech sector. Leveraging the strength of Alberta's universities and colleges and connecting graduates to this entrepreneurial vision will build more connections between higher education and our economy. Information and eligibility requirements on the new immigration streams for international students can be found here. The government of Alberta said that in 2018/19, Alberta’s state-funded post-secondary institutions hosted more than 25,000 international students. As recently reported in StudyTravel Magazine news, the Canadian government allowed international students to enter the country from October 20th as long as they are attending a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) with a Covid-readiness plan approved by its provincial government. At the time of writing, the list of eligible DLI’s on the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) website shows 39 post-secondary institutions in Alberta with approved plans.
