AN IMPORTANT TOOL for keeping teeth and gums healthy is the toothbrush. That might seem so obvious that it’s not worth saying, but people make a surprising number of basic mistakes when it comes to their toothbrushes. 1. Replace That Toothbrush Regularly Are the bristles frayed or bent? Are some missing? It’s time to get a new one. The ADA recommends that we replace our toothbrushes at least three times a year. ... 2. Take It Slow When Brushing As often as dentists everywhere remind patients to brush for two full minutes, the average is only about 45 seconds. This simply isn’t long enough to get the full cleaning effect. The repeated motions are what clear plaque and food particles away, so don’t skimp! 3. Brush Gently (and Use a Gentle Brush) Cleaning plaque away from teeth is not the same as scrubbing tile grout. Soft bristles and gentle pressure are enough, but brushing hard or using a firm-bristled brush can actually result in gum recession over time. 4. Proper Toothbrush Storage The longer toothbrushes stay damp, the more likely they are to end up smelly and covered in germs. Toothbrushes need a chance to dry out between uses. Store it upright in a place with airflow (but not close to the toilet yuck!). #brushyourteeth #toothbrush #tips

NOT ALL OF OUR teeth have the same shape. The reason we need so many different types of teeth is that we are designed to eat both plants and meat. Let’s take a closer look at the four types of teeth we have. The incisors are the front four teeth (both on the top and the bottom). The middle ones are central incisors and the two on the sides are lateral incisors. These teeth are great at slicing food, but not for chewing it. The next teeth in line are usually called canines... or eyeteeth. These have the longest roots of any of our teeth and make up the corners of our smiles. Their sharp points help us grip and tear food, especially meat. Third in line are the eight premolars. They have sharp outer edges to help the canines tear food and some chewing surface to help the molars grind it up. We only have premolars as adults; they replace our baby molars. Finally, we have between eight and twelve molars. These are our largest teeth, with wide chewing surfaces and multiple roots. Molars are essential to grinding up food before we can swallow it. #teeth #toothfacts #interesting

ROOT CANAL TREATMENT saves teeth that would otherwise have to be extracted. It’s pretty amazing, and the success rate is incredibly high compared to other types of surgeries. Getting the field of endodontics to where it is now hasn’t always been smooth sailing, however. Mid-1700s: Pierre Fauchard, the father of modern dentistry, described dental pulp removal and dispelled the legend of the tooth worm, which had long been considered the cause of caries and toothaches. (Tur...ns out it was sugar all along.) 1800s: A steady string of advancements took place, including the invention of gutta-percha for filling cleaned root canals, rubber dam clamp forceps, and even dental X-rays! 1910: William Hunter gave a diatribe on focal infection theory. He believed a treated tooth would cause chronic diseases in other parts of the body. That is false; in fact, reality is closer to the opposite. An UNTREATED tooth infection can lead to other serious health problems. Focal infection theory took off like crazy and put endodontists on the ropes for decades, while countless teeth even perfectly healthy ones! were needlessly pulled in the name of curing random diseases. It took until the late ‘40s or early ‘50s before the weight of lab research and clinical evidence finally proved that root canal treatment is a good thing! #rootcanaltreatment #teeth #history

SOMETIMES WE’RE SO excited to eat some of the pizza that just came out of the oven that we end up burning our mouths. It happens to the best of us, but there are a few things we can do to soothe that burn. 1. Begin by sipping some cold water. It feels good and keeps us hydrated so our mouths can produce enough saliva to protect the burned area from bacteria. 2. Stay cool by grabbing a yogurt, fruit cup, or applesauce. Maybe even try a smoothie or some froyo. ... 3. Add half a teaspoon of salt to a cup of warm water, stir, swish, spit, and repeat! It’s a good way to fight bacteria and help the burned area heal, and it’s a great remedy for sore gums or a recent dental procedure. 4. Another way to speed up the healing process is to apply sugar or honey directly to the burned area. This provides quick energy to the damaged cells, but make sure to drink some water after to rinse away the residue. 5. If needed, take over-the-counter pain relievers for the first little while. Fortunately, oral tissues heal more quickly than any other part of the body, so even a painful burn to the tongue should be all better in days! #burn #mouthburn #toohot
