Should women and men train the same? I hear it all the time with my clients. Men say they want to build and grow in muscle size and tighten their mid region. Women want to tighten and tone their overall body while adding curves and shape. And 9/10 times the women always end with but I don’t want to train too heavy and get all bulky. Let me speak to the women right now, curves, shape and fat loss come from building muscles. Heavy lifting is the only way to make sure you ke...ep accelerating your success and avoid plateaus. You will not bulk up and become manly as some have said to me in the past. You will just place the missing piece of the puzzle to get the results you’ve always desired. So back to the main question.. should women and men train the same. Simply put, yes. As many of my clients are women I will now speak to the majority. Heavy lifting builds muscle which in turn helps burn more fat. I’ve talked before about doing heavy compound movements while training with me and how it accelerates fat loss while building curves and shape. Put the pink dumbbells down (I know I sold them to you but it’s time to upgrade!) and consider amping your results by adding weight and heavier lifting in your routine. Both men and women need to train at least 2 times a week with heavy resistance and compound movements to cause the muscle to respond with... growth. If you’ve ever consulted with us about when to eat those sweets you’re craving, we’ve always said there’s no better time that right after a strenuous workout or immediately following your meal on workout days. We LOVE brownies so we thought what better way to get a post workout meal in by mixing up our sweet potatoes (aka yams) and a high quality protein shake. Voila! Post workout meal is done and a satiating treat has been had! Here’s the recipe. Enjoy ... Makes 12 servings Each serving has: 101 calories 18g carbs 4g protein 2g fat Ingredients * 2 whole sweet potato * cup quinoa flour * 1 whole zucchini, sliced * cup cocoa powder, unsweetened * 1 tsp baking powder * 2 egg * 3 egg whites * cup honey Directions Prep: 75 min. Cook: 30 min. Total: 105 min. 1. Preheat oven to 415 F. 2. Bake potatoes for approximately one hour, or until they're soft. Allow to cool to room temperature. 3. Preheat oven to 350 F. 4. Mash sweet potatoes into a large mixing bowl. Add all remaining ingredients and mix thoroughly. 5. Evenly divide batter into a muffin pan. Active rest days If you are physically active 4-5 days a week, you have to try to find time to rest. There are two different style of rest. Complete rest: this is a style of rest that requires no physical activity at all. You should try to get adequate sleep, proper nutrition and enough hours with your feet up, allowing your body to recuperate and heal completely. You should aim to get at least one of these days a week in.... The second style of rest is Active rest: this style of rest requires you to put the weights away for the day. It does not require room service, breakfast in bed and a maid to answer your little bell every time to ring it. This style of rest is more in line with active recovery. Getting the blood flowing to allow it to circulate the body and heal muscle tissue. Riding a bike, going for a walk or my favourite skating are all examples of this. Long story short, as important as lifting is. Rest is equally important if not more important at times. Try to aim for one of each of these styles of rest as well as your training days. I try to split my week into 2 training days, a full rest day. Followed my two more training day and an active rest day. Keep lifting, keep setting goals and keep giving no matter what the outcome is!
