Listening requires very little effort and yet, for something that seems so easy, it is the weak link in the skill set of many salespeople. When I listen in on sales phone calls, I sometimes hear a few sudden gasps from the client as if she is trying to say something but can’t get a word in. I tell the salesperson, Quick! Call 911! Your client is choking! . . . because you won’t let her speak! Many salespeople don’t even notice when a client is trying to talk. Don’t be that kind of salesperson.
