DYK: The Bike to Work Week (BTWW) event began in Greater Victoria (Bike to Work Victoria) in 1995 with a core group of riders committed to raising the profile of commuter cycling. The first event counted approx. 500 participants, in 2019 56,074 participants BC wide chose their bikes over their car. One of the questions we hear a lot: Why should I register and log my trips? Well, there are a couple of reasons: ... you can win some amazing prizes, incl. a cycling adventure for 2 in Portugal (sponsored by Exodus Travels) you can compete with other work place or school teams and help save the environment by doing so. also, by logging your trips, your accumulated KM become visible in BC wide stats which, in turn, help us to continue our community support. Go By Bike BC Society (formerly Bike to Work BC Society) was initially formed as the provincial body to secure and share resources to help communities throughout British Columbia deliver successful Bike to Work Week events. Hey students, teacher, parents - have you signed up for GoByBike (Fall 2020) yet? Is your team ready to roll? Especially during these stressful times and with partially remote classes or online education programs, going for a ride is the best activity to get away from the screen, air out your brain and get your vision straight . This year, on the new system, team leaders can invite and add their team members anytime before the start of the event. That way everybody is r...eady to hop on their bikes and their profile is all set to log those rides between September 28 and October 4, 2020. I Go by Bike. It is a smart decision. Less car and less television. Bike rides make my day less stressful. I can have fun and be careful.... I enjoy the roads, mountains and trails Im grateful for nature and its details. I see animals, flowers and waterfalls still following health and safety protocols. Go by bike and wear a helmet all the time Thats the most important rhyme. Gyms and other sports still more polemic but bicycles can help during the COVID-19 pandemic The weather is great, it is bike season dont make your house a prison. It is a great way to stay healthy practicing social distancing and it seems like lots of people are listening the number of people buying bikes is just increasing. It is also a great way to stay fit. Start to do it, and dont quit. You will love it. Go by bike, It is really good for you. It is nice to your mind and to your body too. - Raquel Rodrigues, Kelowna Register FREE at https://logmyride.gobybikebc.ca/register and be part of the movement! #gobybike #gobybikebc

It's the last day of GoByBike (Fall 2020) and we wanted to share a few more Strava integration and other snapshots from the last days. Forgot to log your bike trips from last week? It's not too late to do so tonight! Also, It is not too late to REGISTER today and log all your last week's trips (or just today's) and enter for a chance to win some amazing prizes including a cycling trip to Portugal sponsored by Exodus Travels. https://logmyride.gobybikebc.ca/... WHY should you log your trips, you ask? Get Active, Outdoors Biking is a great way for you to get outside, get exercise, all while maintaining social distance. These days, we are spending more and more time indoors (working from home, schooling from home, quarantining...), getting exercise has become even MORE important. Help Improve Cycling Infrastructure By registering and logging your rides, the data collected helps us show decision makers how important safe cycling infrastructure is. The more people registered, and the more bike rides logged = the more data to help support the need for cycling improvements. Inspire Life-change Register, participate, and tell others about it so that you can encourage people to try #GoingByBike. Once people TRY, we are confident they will discover it is enjoyable, and they will keep on pedalling. This will lead to healthier lifestyles, cleaner air, and more vibrant communities. Track Your Progress Log your bike rides online to see how many calories you burn, or how many kilograms of greenhouse gases you save when you #GoByBike instead of using your car. Create or Join a Team & Challenge Others Create or join a team of co-workers, family, students, friends, neighbours, etc. and challenge other teams to see who can log the most kilometers, or log the most bike rides. The decision to postpone GoByBike Week in the spring was one of the hardest we had to make - the more excited we are for GoByBike (Fall 2020) taking place from September 28 to October 4, 2020. "With COVID-19, a lot of routines changed, and some forms of physical activity were no longer available to me. More than ever, I appreciated being able to build biking into my daily routine. During the several months that I worked from home, biking mainly took the form of bringing my daughter to daycare, either with her on her own seat on my bike, or with me pulling her in a trailer. This arrangement offered many valued things: time with my daughter, fresh air and time outdoo...rs, and physical activity before sitting down to my desk for the day. It’s been great for me, and for her, too the next generation of biker!" -- Lise Luppens, Terrace With the last days of GoByBike (Fall 2020) this weekend, why not plan some family biking time and log your and your family's trips to enter for a chance to win some great prizes?!! Are you looking for ideas how to participate in GoByBike (Fall 2020) as a family, a group of friends or any sort of "riding bubble". Heres what Dana Hudson and friends from Vernon organized in the spring to stay active, have fun and #GoByBike: "During these weeks of staying home with the people we live with, our family has participated in a number of bike scavenger hunts with some other families that we enjoy spending time with. Each family takes a turn organizing an event f...or the rest to participate in. The host family emails a map with a list of destinations and creative photo ideas for each family to collect and submit back to them. Each participating family is given a staggered start time so that there wont be any crossover at the destination points. At the end of the day, all the families gather in a Zoom meeting to share photos and stories and be awarded silly titles like Team With the Best Socks or Team Most Enthusiastic About Coconuts. We just finished our third event and the host families just keep upping the ante! We all look forward to these outings where we can have fun as a family, get out of the house, explore our community, share safe connections with friends, and stay active!" You dont need expensive cycling gear to have fun on a bike. However, there is some important gear to consider to ensure your bike is safe and secure: - A stead...y front white light - A flashing red rear light - A bell or horn - A helmet - High visibility clothing or reflective straps - A water bottle - A phone for emergencies Tips: - Dont rely on just a cable lock. Get a good U-lock or metal folding lock to secure your bike. - A pair of fenders are a great investment, as they keep you dry and clean. They are especially important if you want to avoid having to change clothes on your morning commute. "Every night I would get an alert from my driveway security camera, and at first I was a bit annoyed, but then I found myself looking forward to the evening alert. And then inspiration struck, in the form of my wife giving me this great idea. What transpired has turned into the best part of an otherwise dreary pandemic summer." #gobybike #gobybikebc #flattenthecurvenotthetire

"I once heard a quote, get out of your head and into your body. It made sense to me. Its a straightforward way to explain how I use exercise to manage my mental health, especially when it starts to go sideways. [...] For the maximum effect and enjoyment, I go ride my bike on dirt."

Make sure to create a new account to be able to log your trips during the upcoming GoByBike (Fall 2020) event September 28 - October 4, 2020. www.gobybikebc.ca .. and meet Emily, part of the Big Bear Software team who supported us big time to have the new site up and running!... "GoByBike BCs annual Bike To Work week was my second week at my first job after my university graduation. Having something like commuting by bike to connect with my new co-workers made the transition from school to the workforce much more manageable. I remember when we went to the event wrap-up party as a team, I had the opportunity to get to know my co-workers for the first time. Now, several years out of university, I feel very fortunate to have had a chance to work on the GoByBike BC project and hope that the new system that I helped build will allow someone else to connect with their peers, co-workers, or friends like it did for me." #gobybike #gobybikebc

Meet Keith, the CEO of Big Bear Software - together with his team he went on a very special ride supporting the re-launch of our new website https://gobybikebc.ca/. "From my first Hot Wheels trike I used to ride around the neighborhood to my first bike I ever bought for myself as a teenager (a 10 speed!!!) to my mountain bike I bought soon after graduating from U of A to my road bike recently for triathlons, I have always enjoyed cycling. Riding my bike for hours through the ...River Valley in Edmonton helped me through my engineering degree. A car accident 20 years ago kept me off the bike for several years until I started teaching my two boys how to ride their first bikes and I started again. I actually had to relearn how to ride a bike, it is possible to forget! When I attended my first Bike to Work Week in Penticton several years ago, I was shocked at how much easier it was to get to some places on a bike compared to a car. Every year it has got me on my bike earlier than I normally would have. Getting back in the habit of cycling again encouraged me to complete my first of several triathlons 3 years ago at the age of 40. It was tough this year seeing the event cancelled, but Im excited for September! Im very proud of our team for what we have accomplished together with the Go By Bike BC Society team." #gobybike #gobybikebc

"Bicycles have done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world, wrote Susan B. Anthony in 1896. It may sound surprising, but her statement reflected a new reality. (...) Moreover, the bicycle helped expand womens worlds, allowing many to travel independently; some, for just a few miles, and others great distances, .." #gobybike #gobybikestory #gobybikehistory
