Juvenile Black Rockfish at about 3m depth. These juveniles may live to age fifty and grow to a maximum length of 63 cm. Sexually mature at about length of ~40 c...m and give birth to fully developed young. As it is with rockfish, the older females produce more eggs (are more "fecund"). This is one way colossal management errors were made with overfishing slow-growing rockfish. Many species are extremely long-lived, slow to sexually mature, and the big, old females are the most fertile producing the most eggs and hatching the largest number of healthy young. One study showed that total number of eggs/female Black Rockfish ranged from 299,302 embryos for a 6-year-old female to 948,152 embryos for a 16-year-old female (3 times more eggs). #LongLiveRockfish !
