Today we remember the 106th anniversary of John McCrae’s poem In Flander’s Field. Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae composed In Flanders Fields at the battlefr...ont during the second battle of Ypres in Belgium. In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place: and in the sky The larks still bravely singing fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead: Short days ago, We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved: and now we lie In Flanders fields! Take up our quarrel with the foe To you, from failing hands, we throw The torch: be yours to hold it high If ye break faith with us who die, We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields #LestWeForget

On the morning of April 9, 1917, soldiers from all four divisions of the Canadian Corps stormed the ridge in France for four days of brutal battle against the G...erman forces. The capture of Vimy was a defining moment for Canada, but it came at a great cost. Almost 3,600 Canadian soldiers lost their lives and over seven thousand were wounded. Join us as we honour and remember those who served and sacrificed on this Vimy Ridge Day.
The assault on Vimy Ridge, the northern part of the wider battle of Arras, began at 5:30 am on Easter Monday, April 9, 1917. It was the first occasion on which ...all four divisions of the Canadian Corps attacked as a composite formation. The Canadian achievement in capturing Vimy Ridge owed its success to a range of technical and tactical innovations, very powerful artillery preparation, sound and meticulous planning and thorough preparation. At Vimy, the Canadian Corps and the British XVII Corps on their immediate southern flank had captured more ground, more prisoners and more guns than any previous British Expeditionary Force offensive. May We Remember Them Lest We Forgot

Friday, April 9 is Vimy Ridge Day. Legion flags will fly at half-mast, in memory of over 10,000 Canadians who lost their lives or were wounded during this strat...egically important battle. It took place in France in 1917, during the First World War. As an expression of gratitude for the extreme sacrifices of Canadian soldiers, the area around Vimy Ridge was later decreed Canadian territory by France.
From Comrade Velma Young, Easter Basket Fundraiser Convenor: " THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU... I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the huge succe...ss of the Ladies Auxiliary Easter Basket Fundraiser. Each Basket was valued in excess of $200 and that is thanks to the members who donated very generously. Special thanks to the Committee, Auxiliary members who supported the draw, the bar staff for having ballots and collecting monies at the bar, and to those who purchased tickets. Thank you to Paul Thorne for overseeing the integrity of the draw. The pandemic has made fundraising difficult. We are pleased to announce, with 100% profit, as items for baskets were all donated, a grand total of $1,265.00! This money will certainly help our Auxiliary programs." Congrats to our winners...9 year old Charlotte Currie, whose ticket was purchased by her grandmother, who lives in town. Her grandpa picked up the Basket for her and am certain her eyes will be very big The second Basket winner was Shirley Schmidt of Goderich. Her eyes seemed rather big too when she was notified Thank you again and we wish each and everyone, a Happy Easter .
Merry Christmas to one and all!
