What’s important to to you as you age? Meaningful aging does not involve winners or losers in terms of longevity and health, but rather the need to focus on what is most meaningful to a person, especially in older age. Sometimes this involves not doing more to stay active but, perhaps, doing less, giving up some control over our lives, being more mindful of others and being aware of the need to forgive and forget. #healthyaging #selflove #seniorhealth #empoweredaging #agingwell

You should never wait more than five minutes to dial 9-1-1 if you experience even one of the signs above. Remember, you could be having a stroke even if you’re ...not experiencing all of the symptoms. And remember to check the time. The responding emergency medical technician or ER nurse at the hospital will need to know when the first symptom occurred. #strokeawareness #stroke #strokeprevention See more

Dehydration occurs when you use or lose more fluid than you take in, and your body doesn't have enough water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions. If you don't replace lost fluids, you will get dehydrated. Anyone may become dehydrated, but the condition is especially dangerous for young children and older adults. #stayhealthy #wellness #olderadults

When’s the last time you had bloodwork done to check your electrolytes? An electrolyte is a substance that conducts electricity when dissolved in water. They are essential for a number of bodily functions. All humans need electrolytes to survive. Many automatic processes in the body rely on a small electric current to function, and electrolytes provide this charge. Electrolytes interact with each other and the cells in the tissues, nerves, and muscles. A balance of different electrolytes is vital for healthy function. #health #care

Doctor visits with #agingparents #medicalappointments Prep: Encourage your parents to let you be involved in their medical appointments and get consent to ‘sit in’ the appointment. Talk to your parents about anything that they are feeling or any changes that you or they notice beforehand and make notes. Bring a list of updated meds (pharmacy will print you a list). During visit (using your notes): Go through all of the concerns. 1. Find out: When was last time blood work was... done? 2. What is your parents’ blood pressure and is it in the normal range? 3. Has there been a weight loss? 4. Don’t be shy to ask to see a specialist for any conditions, memory changes or symptoms. Also: 1. Ask about side-effects and the safety of combining medication. 2. Ask follow up questions. 3. Ask for the doctor to explain terms or concepts you don’t understand. 4. Ask for the results of recent medical tests (sometimes doctors only bring up results if there is an abnormality). 5. Ask if your doctor is communicating with other members of your parent’s health care team don’t assume they are. Be prepared to give them the contact name of physiotherapists, pharmacists, specialists and the other people who are involved in caring for your parent. 6. Check that your doctor is okay with taking the generic drug whenever possible (generic drugs are usually more affordable than brand names). 7. Take notes. #caregiving #caregiversupport #homecare #healthcare #goldcrosscares #bayshorehomehealth See more
