The University of Alberta added to their Canadian record with another 168 Golden Bears and Pandas student-athletes receiving Academic All-Canadian status during the 2019/20 season. Of those 168, 156 are AAC’s from U SPORTS sanctioned sports, while another 12 are from the Bears and Pandas tennis program. HIGHLIGHTS:... The Golden Bears and Pandas 156 U SPORTS Academic All-Canadians are the third most in school history, trialing the 162 from 2018/19, and 158 from 2017/18. The University of Alberta’s All-Time AAC total now stands at 3,225, the most in Canadian University Sport. Four teams also set new program records, including Golden Bears Soccer (11), Pandas Rugby (15), Pandas Swimming (8), and Pandas Track and Field (15). The criteria to be honoured as an AAC is maintaining an average of 80% or better over the academic year, while competing full-time for one of the university’s varsity teams. 10 UAlberta faculties are represented in the AAC total from 2019/20, led by 53 student-athletes from Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation, followed by 36 from Science and 20 from Engineering. While we highly value team and sporting accomplishments at the University of Alberta, Academic All-Canadian honours is perhaps the most remarkable individual accomplishment our student-athletes can receive, said Golden Bears and Pandas Athletic Director, Dr. Ian Reade. To perform athletically at the levels they do, and still find the time and desire to also excel in the classroom is remarkable. To have had over 3,200 Bears and Pandas earn this accomplishment since the program began in 1991 is something I’m incredibly proud of. A big Congratulations to the 2019/20 Academic All-Canadian’s Golden Bears and Pandas Tennis players! Join us on Monday, September 21st as we invite fans, alumni, donors and sponsors of all Bears and Pandas teams for a fun day of golf at the Links at Spruce Grove! The tournament will NOT be a shotgun tournament, as all players will get to choose their tee time between 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. This tournament will be a great opportunity to support any of the 24 varsity programs, ...while also getting in a fun round at one of the best kept courses in the Edmonton area. The cost for the tournament will be $82, which includes the green fee, power cart, driving range, and a $20 food voucher. Registration will close on September 16th at midnight. While this is not a normal year, we wanted to create an opportunity in which we can physically connect with our alumni, donors and supporters in a safe, responsible and fun way! The registration cost is the direct cost of hosting the tournament, if you wish to make an additional charitable donation you can do so through our Support The Sport Fund or the Women Fore Pandas Fund while registering for the tournament! Golden Bears & Pandas Athletics also acknowledges the uncertainty around the planning of events in 2020 due to the health concerns created by COVID-19. Support the Sport - UofA Athletics Fundraiser Every year, Golden Bears & Pandas Tennis student athletes make sacrifices to excel in both athletics and academics. The 2020/21 season will be no exception. Our student athletes are proud, dedicated, skilled and driven. It is these qualities that push them in their pursuit of excellence, but they can’t do it alone. They need to be lifted up by people who believe in them and by those who have walked in their shoes. ... Many of you have reached out and asked what can we do to help? The goal is to grow our community of annual and monthly donors. Ongoing support from you provides student athletes with the resources and opportunities to excel at the highest level, making it possible to continuously raise the bar. Your charitable gift will make an impact in several important areas, including: Athletic scholarships Athlete health and performance services Academic and tutoring support Technical coaching support Making a commitment today with a pledge of support for Pandas and/or Golden Bears Tennis will ensure that we can fully support our student athletes during the unprecedented season ahead and for many seasons to come.
