Do you know what an Erratic is? I didn’t before a week ago. The story starts when my husband asks his friend Rod to dig up a rock that was interfering with... his equipment in the field. The top was about a foot square. This annoying rock ended up being about 10 X 7 X 5 feet. There was lots of discussion about the rock my husband thought we should bury it again only deeper and I thought it might look good on the lawn. Last week, our friends Wayne and Margie Savigny were visiting, and they tell us that the rock is an erratic, which is the result of glacial prehistoric movement. On Saturday, the high hoe came to bury a barn ruins and a decision had to be made about what to do about the rock. One of my guests, Melvina and I decided where it should go, and Jeff rolled it to its new home on the corner of the lawn. We still really didn’t know what the rock looked like because it was covered in mud. My grandson, Jack and son-in-law Jeff Stewart power washed it and it turns out to be a beautiful rock. My daughter Helena spotted flecks of mica, feldspar, pink and white quartz. There are striking pink veins through the rock and it sparkles in the sunlight. Another fun story about erratics is when Wayne who is a geological engineer was doing his PhD he referred to erratics a lot in his paper. As a test, in one location he wrote erotic instead of erractic to see if anyone would catch it. No one did and it has led to more interesting conversation this week. After reading about the erratic on Wikipedia, I think the rock wanted to be revealed. Below I copied some information about erratics from Wikipedia and here is a link with more https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glacial_erratic#Canada A glacial erratic is a piece of rock that differs from the size and type of rock native to the area in which it rests. "Erratics" take their name from the Latin word errare (to wander), and are carried by glacial ice, often over distances of hundreds of kilometres. Erratics can range in size from pebbles to large boulders such as Big Rock (15,000 tonnes or 17,000 short tons) in Alberta. Geologists identify erratics by studying the rocks surrounding the position of the erratic and the composition of the erratic itself. Erratics are significant because: They can be transported by glaciers, and they are thereby one of a series of indicators which mark the path of prehistoric glacier movement. Their lithographic origin can be traced to the parent bedrock, allowing for confirmation of the ice flow route. They can be transported by ice rafting. This allows quantification of the extent of glacial flooding resulting from ice dam failure which release the waters stored in proglacial lakes such as Lake Missoula. Erratics released by ice-rafts that were stranded and subsequently melt, dropping their load, allow characterization of the high-water marks for transient floods in areas like temporary Lake Lewis. Here is more The term "erratic" is commonly used to refer to erratic blocks, which Geikie describes as: "large masses of rock, often as big as a house, that have been transported by glacier-ice, and have been lodged in a prominent position in the glacier valleys or have been scattered over hills and plains. And examination of their mineralogical character leads the identification of their sources".[2] In geology, an erratic is material moved by geologic forces from one location to another, usually by a glacier. Erratics are formed by glacial ice erosion resulting from the movement of ice. Glaciers erode by multiple processes: abrasion/scouring, plucking, ice thrusting and glacially-induced spalling. Glaciers crack pieces of bedrock off in the process of plucking, producing the larger erratics. In an abrasion process, debris in the basal ice scrapes along the bed, polishing and gouging the underlying rocks, similar to sandpaper on wood, producing smaller glacial till. In ice thrusting, the glacier freezes to its bed, then as it surges forward, it moves large sheets of frozen sediment at the base along with the glacier. Glacially-induced spalling occurs when ice lens formation with the rocks below the glacier spall off layers of rock, providing smaller debris which is ground into the glacial basal material to become till.[3][4]

For 8 years or more this group meets at our B&B and attends the 4th Line theatre. They lovingly call themselves the 4th Line Winers. We have become good friends and look forward to their annual visit. They come from Montreal, Barrie and Oakville.

I want to give a shout out to Seema and her partner. We had the most fascinating breakfast conversation about how their parents from India and mine from the Netherlands bucked the system and their cultures for true love. I told them that I would share links to Bollywood Mashup in Mississauga that they are organizing. It looks like a great event. Years ago, when I was considering to open a B&B I asked my friend Rondi Brown who had a B&B in Fenelon Falls for advice. She said "All my guests are fabulous and some are even more fabulous than others" That statement has been in my mind over these last 16 years and I think so often how true it is. I am privileged to meet the most fabulous people from all over the world and never leave my deck. These pictures are of Kris Olsen and Frances Simone. Kris is from Pennsylvania and was here for a dog show in Norwood. At home, she has a golden retriever that she takes to visit people in Hospice and she stays with people who have no one until they pass. Frances is from Toronto and was here to learn construction skills for women. Both fabulous people. Cora Whittington
