This week on Throwback Thursday, we’re featuring Channarong Ratanaseangsuang!! Channarong is a former badminton player and coach who represented both Canada and... Thailand in international competitions, and was formerly one of the most elite singles players in the world. Some of his most notable achievements include reaching the finals of the All-England Championships in 1963, winning the Canada Open Championships in 1964 & ‘65, the US Open in 1964 & '68, Ratana, as he was called, was well-recognized for incredible consistency in tournament play. After moving to Canada from Thailand in the 1960’s, Ratana, led the Canadian National team from 1967 to 1973 and again from 1979 to 1986 as a coach. He was very involved, mentoring Canadian athletes during the World Championships in 1980, ‘83, and ’85, the Commonwealth Games of 1970, ’82, and ’86, and the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games, among many others. His contributions to the sport of badminton led him being inducted into the American, Thai, and Swedish Sports Hall of Game.
