Here's a great explanation of why training in a harness is not such a good idea. Robert is a great dog trainer and activist among the shelter/dog rehabilitation communities. I have used harnesses on my personal dogs in dog sports and competition ONLY, when a build up of frustration is wanted to get dogs revved up and pulling against pressure i.e dock diving and flyball! This is with controlled trained dogs only! I would never use a harness to train obedience ...or leash manners as it goes against the dogs natural instinct to pull. I want to teach a dog to yield to pressure not pull against pressure! If you are a dog owner who let's your dog immediately jump out of your car and onto the trail system 100 feet away from you and almost gets hit by my car as it's doing laps around the vehicle...its not my fault. If your dog runs wildly onto a trail before getting your dog under control, how are people supposed to receive this dog? Do you think people enjoy a dog jumping at them and running into you and at your kids and dogs like a hurricane? If a dog is that hyper, th...en its needs are simply not being met and you need to seriously take a look at your lifestyle, routine and teaching your dog rules and boundaries. Wow people. For god's sake. Be proactive and train your dog. Huge liability bikity waiting to happen. My kids walk on the trails with and without dogs. I walk and bike the trails with and without dogs. You will avoid all this negativity and questionable dog ownership by supplying leashing and controlling your dog. News flash. Not everyone appreciates your dogs exuberance or muddy clothes after your dog has repeatedly jumped up at passerbys. Not everyone owns or likes dogs. It's their right to use the trails safely. If you are too lazy to do that, then at leash leash the damn out of control dog before it gets hit by a car, gets into a dog fight, injures a cyclist as it collides into them or knocks down a kid walking with their parent. Izzy is not great with other dogs so she is learning to be calm and confident with dogs sharing her space at a respectable distance. Jackson is getting used to not have constant contact and attention which can lead to seperation anxiety. So proud of these 2 challenging doodle GD board and train clients. Raven has gone home and now the owners will have better control of her while she navigates with the wheelchair, play at a park, have solid recall, no chasing the family cat or bolting out the front door. She is more polite, listening better, utlizing the crate with no issues now, usjngvplace command for impulse control inside and outdoors and is generally calmer all around. No more jumping onto her owners. :) ... Hudson goes home soon and on route I got lunch and snuck him a french fry. Yeah, I love dogs, I'm not a drill sergeant all the time! lmao Hudson had similar challenges as Raven, although his barking was out of control. He barked constantly indoors and outdoors. He has learned to make better choices and share space. To think first and foremost not guard bones and objects. This has been challenging with him but now the owners know what to do in the situation he has an object he has taken and how to retrieve it from him safely. She may not seen like it, but this gal Izzy is learning how to chill out with other dogs and stimulating triggers around her. She is back tied for saftey while she is learning. Izzy is a very sweet bulldog but has some aggressive tendencies that we are working on. She is no longer jumping up when excited. She is learning to make better choices with our support and guidance. She is highly leash reactive anx out of her frustration will redirect. That is a work in progress. Baby... steps. One day at a time. These two Huskies, Luka and Kianna, are going through a calming process after their GD consult. We are doing an exercise called " feeding the chickens" to keep the dogs busy in their outdoor pen and lots of place and quiet practice at home. GD private lesson client Charolette is learning to stay put when people visit her home. She is also learning to trust her owners leadership better to feel more comfortable around strangers and other dogs without reacting negatively. Charolette is a Portuguese water dog (PWD).The added challenges of a reactive dog is also having reactive dogs around you.
