Many of you know my how I became a sleep consultant story, but in case you don’t, let me start there. Our oldest (now 6) spurred this passion of mine for sleep, routines and schedules. He wasn’t a great sleeper as an infant, and as my husband and I struggled to figure out his sleep. I remember saying I wish we had a sleep consultant that lived with us, each day is different, I never know what I am supposed to do!. When we figured it all out and had him sleeping better, I ...decided no parent should ever have to go through the sleep deprivation, the struggles with conflicting information both in literature and from well-meaning loved ones, and the resulting strain all of this puts on every day things like relationships, parenting, jobs, decision making and even safety! Anyway, this passion for sleep, routines and schedules paired with my love of helping others lead me to this career and it has been amazing. The Good Night Sleep Site team, lead by founder Alanna McGinn, has become a second family. A group of ladies with diverse backgrounds and experience all over Canada and even into the United States. If I don’t have the answer, someone on the team always does- not just sleep related, even for personal things like parenting or replacing a washing machine! Over the past 3 years, I have had the privilege of working with some incredible families. Connections in the small business community have lead to friendships I cherish. I have been home and had flexibility when our little guys are ill or my husband was working away, and when the world shut down with the pandemic, I didn’t have to do a major shift to working from home because I was already here! I know I don’t have to explain the struggles of parenting, working, and learning from home, and protecting mental health all during a world-wide pandemic- many of you are right here with me- but I have come to the point where I need to be even more present in our family life. So, while I am not certain that I like the idea of giving up something I am so passionate about, I am certain that this is the right decision for myself and our family. I have made the tough decision to finish up with the Good Night Sleep Site Team as of the end of April. Any of my past clients can reach out to Good Night Sleep Site for additional support, and anyone who was on the fence about working together can do the same :) They are all wonderful and will provide great support. Thank you all for keeping me busy! This has been a journey that I won’t ever forget.

In Ontario we are back to online learning and with times of uncertainty, sleep disruptions are common. If you or your little one are struggling with sleep, or you notice changes over the next week or two, know that you are not alone. It is normal that sleep is impacted when life changes occur. Major life changes- such as a move or change of schools/ daycare, loss of a loved one, or financial stress can all impact sleep greatly. Minor changes such as having a parent home throu...ghout the day, having someone stay with your family (whether this is for a couple days, weeks, or more), change in normal routine, etc. can also significantly impact sleep. So, what can we do about it? Routine- a consistent routine is incredibly important during times of uncertainty. Don’t stress too much though! Every day does not need to be scheduled down to the minute. For sleep quality, we want to wake around the same times each day, do certain activities (think meals, snacks and naps) around the same times, and go to bed at a reasonable and age appropriate time. Consistency in routine provides our little ones with a sense of comfort and security- even when things are unpredictable in the world around us! Natural light exposure- this helps our bodies’ wake-sleep cycle. Natural light can be especially helpful at the beginning of the day. Get outside as often as you can! Even if it just means sitting on your balcony, front porch, or by a sunny window. Self-care- this is one we hear about all the time! Now more than ever, we need to take care of ourselves so that we can show up for our families and those that need us most. Even just a few minutes here and there can be beneficial. When your little ones are napping or have gone to bed for the night, or in the early morning hours, sneak in some time to do something that makes you happy! We are all in this together! Work to create a new normal and everyone in your house will settle into the changes. Be patient with yourself and your little ones. We have done this before and we can do it again!

First of all, there are no bad habits IF they are working for your family. However, if something isn't working, we know it is time to make some changes. With sleepy newborns, feeding to sleep can be unavoidable, but by around 3-4 months of age, it is something we want to avoid. There are a few reasons for this: 1. How our baby falls asleep at the start of the night or for nap is how they will need to return to sleep, should they wake but it is not time to wakeup yet. The l...earning of independent sleep habits can be hindered. 2. To get the best feed, baby needs to be alert, not sleepy. A lazy feed will mean they don’t eat as much and in the end, could be hungry during sleep. 3. Allowing time between a feed and sleep means that our little one’s can work to digest their food working through any gas or stomach discomfort. 4. When our babies have had time to digest, their internal systems are slowing down, aligning with our external cues that it is time to sleep.
