What should parents do about bedtime and the Fall time change? There are two options we recommend: Change the clocks and start going to bed at the new times and wait for everyone to adjust. ... OR Begin a gradual shift in your child's schedule. Starting a few days before the time change shift your child’s bedtime and wake time 15 minutes later than usual. Remember when the clocks change, their new 7pm bedtime will actually be an 8pm bedtime according to their body clock, so shifting everything later prior to the change will help reset their internal rhythms making it an easier transition come Sunday night. Continue this shift by 15 minutes each day until you reach the time change. You may want to go as far as shifting their entire routine throughout the day and make naps and mealtimes slightly later as well. Hang in there moms and dads. The shift in this new schedule normally takes a week or two for our kiddies to adapt to it. While their bodies may not feel tired during this time change our kids may get cranky that first week while their bodies wait to nap and eat. They will get there! Remember my two favourite words! Persistence and consistency! You will get through this. Have you been thinking about introducing a toddler clock into your night routine? I just went through the process with my son who will be 3 on Wednesday! We needed it for some early wakings We went with the Gro Clock as my son loves the concept of the sun, and stars and moon meaning sleepy time, so this was made for him. You can also turn the blue light that beams at night to be completely dark so you have no light in the room! We explained the concept of the clock, went ...over some new sleep rules and in 3 nights he was putting himself back to sleep and waiting for Mr. Sun each morning! This sounds much easier then it was, I promise you! It was super tough, but toddlers are tough, stubborn and so smart they really know how to get to your heart strings! If you are thinking about introducing a toddler clock remember: You can introduce the clock as early as 2 years old and it is even a great visual for older children as well Make sure you explain the clock to your child, show them how it works, what they are going to see at night and when they wake Make clear and simple expectations/rules of what to do, for example, when the sun comes up, I will come and get you from your bed (when you do this in the morning, make it a big deal they waited for Mr. Sun, no matter or crying or not, praise goes a long way) Remain consistent, these things take time and effort and its something new so give them a chance to adapt If they are in a bed, make sure that it is out of reach as we know, toddlers love to press buttons and keep the cord safely out of reach(The Gro Clock does have a locking feature for the buttons as well) research different options for the clock and make sure we are not adding light into the room at night that may keep them up If you are thinking about adding a toddler clock or wanting sleep support with your toddler, please do not hesitate to reach out for a free 15 minute discovery call. Id love to help you get sleep back on track. #bringbackbedtime #sleepiseverything #toddlerlife #toddlersleep #momlife #parenting #toddlerclock #sleep #durhammoms #socialworker
