As I study for my upcoming math exam, I’m sitting here thinking of my fellow activists in lockdown in Quebec for #RosesLawLockdown and a little math I did after... the Toronto lockdown. Thought I’d share: Numbers: Plant manager says approximately 8000 chickens are killed per hour. He says of the 2000 workers, at any given time only 20 of them are on the kill floor - 9 workers taking chicks out of crates, 7 workers hanging live chickens by their feed on a moving belt, 2 workers decapitating chickens who were not properly ‘stunned’ in the electric bath, and 2 workers at the end of the slitting line to check if chickens are unconscious, decapitated, and bled out before the sculling bath. He claims chickens are carefully taken by both feet and placed into the moving belt. Most people know I’m pretty good at math, and especially good at arithmetic. LET’S DO SOME MATH! 800060= 133.3 chickens per minute. 134.3 9 = 14.8 chickens being hung by each worker per minute This means a worker has a little under 4 seconds to hang a live, scared, moving chicken upside down by the feet and ensure they are secured into the shackles. During that time, plant manager says, they safely pick up all chicks in a way that causes no harm or suffering and they always pick up the chickens by both legs as is mandated by the animal welfare standards. Okay, so that sounds pretty much impossible to me. Let’s now consider his original figure of 8000 chickens being processed hour. The Maple Leaf Slaughterhouse at Keele and St. Clair (whose plant manager I spoke with) says on its website it processes 250, 000 chickens per day. MATH TIME! Assuming a 24 hour processing period: 250, 00024=10, 416.7 That’s an extra 2,416.7 birds PER HOUR that we’re not accounted for in this plant manager’s 8000 chickens an hour estimate! Let’s see how that changes our stats. 10, 416.7 60 = 173.6 chickens per minute. 173.69=19.3 14.8 chickens being hung by each worker per minute . So now, each worker hanging the chickens has 3 SECONDS to hang a live, scared, moving chicken upside down by the feet and ensure they are secured into the shackles on the moving belt. During that time, plant manager says workers safely pick up all chicks in a way that causes no harm or suffering and they always pick up the chickens by both legs as is mandated by the animal welfare standards.

Hey #theaTO and #cdncult - Meghan Murphy is an awful TERF who has no business spouting her bigtory at a publicly funded institution like our beloved Toronto Public Library. Please consider signing this petition to show solidarity with trans folks within and without our community! https://www.change.org/p/toronto-public-library-request-for

Can we talk about the fact that this was on the news last night for all of 30 seconds, meanwhile we had to listen to a couple from Ontario complain about Air Canada's amenities for 5 minutes. Dear Media, please get your shit together.

The Rules: You have to say "sometimes" ...followed by something bad that happens. You can't repeat yourself in content or form.... You can't hesitate. You can't use the words 'and' or 'because' to extend a thought. You can't inject emotion. Results: More difficult than it looks.
