May 5th is Red Dress Day and the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls & Two Spirit Peoples (MMIWG2S). On this day, we remember those who have lost their lives due to colonial and gendered violence, and those who are still missing across Canada and the United States. Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit Peoples are three times more likely to face sexual, gendered and domestic violence than non-Indigenous people in Canada. This deliberate... pattern of human rights violations is perpetuated by historical systemic racial and colonial structures put in place by the Canadian government who continue to marginalize and eradicate Indigenous Nations, their land and communities til this day. Indigenous women make up 16% of all female homicide victims, and 11% of missing women, even though Indigenous people make up 4.3% of the population of Canada ( Assembly of First Nations). These alarming and devastating statistics are a grim reminder of the social, political, and racial inequality that exists between Indigenous peoples and the rest of Canada. We cannot turn a blind eye on this human rights crisis. MMIW2S is an ongoing systemic tragedy that requires urgent and accountable actions from the Canadian state and government. Red Dress Day is a campaign started by Métis artist Jamie Black to symbolize Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two Spirit Peoples. We encourage everyone to share awareness not just today-but everyday.
