This was preventing her and her owner from competing in dressage. The lameness was not pathological and she was veterinary cleared. Molly & her owner were part of a one day horse-rider workshop. In the before photos, you can see a global right side bending with a flexed lumbar spine and bilateral extension of the hind limbs. In the after photos, you will see compensated lateral curvature with reduced lumbar flexion. Pain is the most common cause of lameness in all horses. Due to the fact that the patient had been medically cleared, mechanical restriction due to asymmetry of structure can be assumed in this case. The global right side bending was causing a restriction of the motion characteristics, specifically the ability to draw the right limb forward. Contracted or contractures of soft tissue can impair the function of adjacent joints by changing the nature of the soft tissue in the area. Altered or shortened lateral trunk soft tissue on the right, such as the latissimus dorsi, and serrate muscles, would alter the range of motion of the right fore limb restricting omotransverse, trapezius, and the brachiocephalic muscle’s ability to draw the limb forward.
