Yesterday our family said a difficult goodbye. He was the father to my wife and Pappy to my children. He was my nextdoor neighbour and drinking buddy on a hot summer day when we were supposed to be getting work done but ended up bending the old elbow a little too much that we'd both agree "nothing else is getting done today". . He meant the world to my kids and would be outside every morning to see William on to the bus for school. . He was my mentor as a woodworker. I neve...r would have touched a table saw if it wasn't for him. I never would have pushed the limits of my skills if it wasn't for him. I "borrowed" his tools when I was first starting and when I couldn't figure something out on my own, he always had the answer. He could add fractions in his head better than I can add whole numbers with a calculator (stupid imperial system). . It's not really goodbye though. His memory will live on in all of us. He will live on in the legacy he left behind. In his daughters. In his grandchildren. In the furniture he made. In shop he built from the ground up. In the rooms he renovated. They are an extension of him. He will always be there. And like I told my son, if you ever want to talk to Pappy, you just have go out to the shop and say hi. See more

This sloyd knife was a little birthday gift to myself about a month ago. The blade was hand forged in England by @adamashworth97. It took some time to get here with all that covid business going on but it finally arrived a week or so ago. Totally worth the wait! Sorry for the lack of posting. I took a promotion at the job job and that combined with increased hours of work and 4 straight weeks of night shift has taken its toll, but were still here! . Our friends @rosewoodwine had a unique dilemma they approached us with. In order for them to open back up to the public they needed to find a way to offer sample flights in plastic cups and also do it outdoors due to space limitations. Now if youve ever been to Rosewood, youll know tha...t theyre located up on the Beamsville bench and things can get quite windy at times...not something that goes along well with plastic cups. Anyway, we made these 1.5" thick flight boards for them that shelter the cup from the wind and help prevent them from blowing away. Due to tight time constraints and Niagara opening up this weekend, we sent them out only partially finished so they had something to relaunch with post-covid. When they are fully finished, they will have chalk paint where my thumb is for marking the wine varieties. Thanks to @big_beaver_milling_co for surface prepping the lumber on these. Couldnt have got them out otherwise! White oak is one of those woods that can be rather boring, especially the quarter sawn variety that is used in barrel making. It lacks character, is quite homogeneous in appearance, and really isnt that attractive unless stained. But, it makes wine taste awesome. Thats its primary purpose. Quarter sawn wood is also the most stable way of milling lumber which is very important when youre trying to hold liquid inside it. One attractive characteristic of quarter sawn oak is ...the medullary rays that can be seen in the first and second pic of this post. Also known as pith rays or tiger rays, these lines run from the center of the tree outward and are a particularly attractive when wood turning. Especially large bowls! The other nice feature of these bottle stoppers is the red wine that has stained into the oak. Theres no denying that this bottle stopper was once a wine barrel!
