Happy Halloween, Everyone! I'm so very excited to showcase a recent branding project with the Office of Aboriginal Affairs & Treaty Education Nova Scotia. They've assembled the Treaty Education Speakers Bureau, a number of Mi'kmaq presenters, artists, and crafters to share their knowledge. Subjects will range from treaty rights & history to the culture of the Mi'kmaw here in Atlantic Canada. Storytelling, in its many forms, has always played a considerable part in Mi'kmaw cul...ture. Deeply planted roots of those stories are traced back to the petroglyphs of Kejimkujik Park & McGowan Lake, Nova Scotia. It was from those living-cultural elements in our heritage that I drew inspiration for the Speakers Bureau brand visuals. By using artistic expressions of our culture's past, we can harness the power of the present and look towards the future on this journey of reconciliation and healing. The Speakers Bureau logo you see is based on the floral-motif petroglyph, which uses the popular double-curve motif as inspiration for its form. This symbol is prominent in traditional Mi'kmaq art, clothing, and regalia. Its elegant, plant-like form emanates growth and the budding of understanding, which feels like the perfect symbol to represent the Bureau and is the very reason for the start of this vital program. This project was done with a good friend of mine, Ashley! I've known this wonderful woman since grade school, and I'm so grateful that we've finally gotten the chance to work together professionally! Gratitude & Tea is a small independent start-up with big ambitions! Its focus is aimed at helping with well-rounded, personal growth and development through coaching & counseling, but it doesn't stop there! Gratitude & Tea will offer support for culturally based activities, cult...ural sensitivity, and awareness sessions. The goal is to strengthen Mi'kmaw identity through achieving a better understanding & appreciation of First Nations culture and history. That includes tradition, holistic wellness, culture inclusivity & Treaty Education. Ashley is the inspiration for her own logo, we wanted to intertwine modern illustration stylizations and Mi'kmaw culture through traditional clothing, symbolism, and historical petroglyphs. It features colours that are bright and reminiscent of celestial landscapes that uplift and animate the soul. Daily practices include yoga, meditation & gratitude! I recently reconnected with one of my very first art teachers, Leonard Paul. For those of you that may not know him, he is an internationally recognized Canadian Mi’kmaq artist whose countless exhibitions and awards speak for themselves. The passion he had for sharing his knowledge and skill when it came to illustration is what helped me discover that I, myself wanted to become an artist of some kind. Thinking about it now, I was around 13 years old when Leonard hosted art cl...asses for the youth of Indian Brook. Now, here we are 17 years later and I have something of his that I can add to my Graphic Design portfolio. What an honor! Here it is, Leonard’s new website! We kept it minimal & classy.
