Let's talk about goslings and goose control work! This is the time of year when geese are hatching out eggs and there are goslings all over the place. Many people express concern about using goose dogs when goslings are present. They worry for the safety of the babies. Rest assured, properly trained goose dogs do NOT disrupt goose parents and their goslings, and NEVER touch the babies!... Goose parents and their goslings are never at risk in the presence of our dogs. We DO continue to run off adult geese who do not have nests or goslings. Sometimes these adults will be near a pair of parents and their babies. Our dogs will run off the adult geese, but leave the young goose families alone. And away go the geese! At this time last year, this park was overrun with geese. Residents in wheelchairs were complaining that their wheels were covered in goose poop after enjoying the park. Disc golf players brought wipes to clean the goose poop off of their discs. This morning when we arrived, there was a grand total of eight geese in the park. Now there are none. We have been making daily visits to the park since February, and almost all of the geese have gone elsewhere.... Most importantly, there has been NO POOP on the trails, and very minimal poop on the grass. What makes a good goose dog? First, good breeding. Good working dogs come from good working parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. Health testing on the parents is important, to ensure that they won't be passing on genetic diseases that could put an early end to a promising career and happy life. A well-bred working line pup should show "drive", a desire to work that's inborn. Second, good training. Not every dog is cut out for herding work, and those who are need to ...be trained. Youngsters commonly want to "grip" their livestock, and must learn to control themselves. Teeth don't touch livestock! Youngsters must also learn to work as a team with their handler, so they don't go rogue and do what they want. Third, love of the job. If you have seen our dogs in action, you know they love what they do. To them, their work is the best thing ever - better than a walk, better than playing fetch, better than a swim at the beach. It's the highlight of their days, and they never seem to get tired of it. The truth is, you can't force a dog to work.
