Please share Today May 1st is the start of Lyme disease Awareness month. Below are some facts about Lyme and tick-associated diseases. We want to make sure t...hat you are aware of what is out there. Despite what our government and doctors believe that ticks and Lyme are only in "certain" parts of Canada couldn't be further from the truth! Ticks are not just found in tall grasses or forests. Ticks have been found on school play grounds, soccer fields, in gardens, backyards and beaches etc... The tick population is exploding! 1) According to the CDC, Lyme Disease is the fastest growing Vector-Borne Infectious Disease. It has been found on every continent but Antarctica. 2) Less than 30% of those infected will get the well known bulls-eye rash. If you do get a rash, is it a specific characteristic that the Lyme bacteria has been transmitted and antibiotics therapy should start ASAP. Please always take pictures of the bite site and any rashes that may appear. 3) The average chronic patient sees at least 6-7 doctors over nearly 2 years before being diagnosed. Many patients have to travel out of province or the country for treatment. 4) Testing in Canada is highly inaccurate nor is it reliable. The test misses over 35% of Lyme disease cases leaving patients to suffer. 5) Not enough studies have been completed regarding attachment time and transmission of bacteria; 12, 24, 36 hours? Nobody knows how long it takes for a tick to feed and infect its host. Research has shown that the Powassan virus can be transmitted in less than 15 minutes! 6) Fewer than 50% of Lyme Patients remember getting or seeing a tick bite. 7) If left untreated, Lyme disease becomes chronic. Affecting every joint, organ and tissue, causing it to become harder to reach and treat. 8)Most ticks transmit more than one disease. They are natures dirty little needle. We have never met a patient who has just Lyme. 9) According to a joint study conducted by scientists at Global Lyme Alliance (GLA) and Brown University, more than 2,000,000 people in the United States could suffer profound disability from a tick bite. 10) Ticks love warm, moist environments. Make sure to do your tick checks from head to toe when you come in from outdoors. Shower as soon as possible and put your clothes in the dryer on high heat for at least 10-15 minutes. 11) Repellents containing deet are unreliable. Repellents with 20% Icaridin is what is recommended. 12) There is over 100 different symptoms of Lyme disease. It is called the Great Imitator; mimicking many other illnesses such as Fibromyalgia, Arthritis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, MS and Lupus. More information can be found at Lyme Ontario, CanLyme and ILADS websites. Feel free to ask any questions!
