Gordie, juggling. Besides writing, one of his skills...

Stories from our porch... The police coasted into the morning, Sunday, and went to work gaining entry to a small house across from ours. Mrs Shavers, a spritely 89-year old, had fallen sometime in the night. She was found in her living room, bruised, a little dazed, but otherwise, apparently, fine. And that's part of the morning's glory, too, because Mrs. Shavers is a marvel of self-sufficiency, and an absolute picture to behold when she comes out of her house all neatly go...t up, and topped with a little hat. She walks with tiny steps, her stride hardly more than her shoe-length. She lives two houses from one comer and, of course, almost a whole block from the other comer. When she comes out of her gate and starts toward the far comer, I always wonder if I should run in and pack her a lunch. Anyway, this lady, Mrs. Shavers, is part of the very real charm of our street, and the Merritt Morning Mirror wishes her a quick recovery, and we'll wait patiently until she's back in the , of paintin See more

Gord's Irish ancestry... Sunday morning at Church corner The 'thief’ was my sainted Irish grandmother's universal symbol for all sinners. "The teef stales his own luck," she'd say, followed by some garbled scriptural quote. "The teefs beef is always a hard chew," - and so on. Anyway, I was reminded of me Gran Sunday morning, sitting on my porch drinking the first cup of coffee of the day and listening to the churches at the comer warm up for their morning in the spotlight. ...Kids were playing in the Anglican yard by 10, and someone inside the church was loosening up the reed in a trumpet. It felt like I was a backgrounder in a Norman Rockwell painting. Suddenly, from Rockwell to New Orleans' Bourbon Street as Anglican Rev Dan appeared, singing into the Sunday morning, followed by the trumpeter followed by the entire flock. Praise the Lord, what a perfectly picturesque Sunday morn. And the ghost of my grandmother croaking "God lets teefs sleep in so they'll miss the Lord's marnin glory." See more
