It will soon be time to visit this place again. Chance Cove is a place where you will see stunning coastlines, Bald Eagles, Capelin rolling on the beach and sometimes whales. It is a small piece of Paradise on earth. Looking forward to feasting my eyes on this wonderful place again

The fog is still going strong. The longer it sticks around the sweeter the sun will be when it shows itself I visited the lower Battery during a thick fog. I had to hang around for a bit so I could see enough of it to shoot. This place is a little more magical when you add the fog. I love the atmosphere and the light peaking through the fog. In the distance you can hear a fog horn going off every few minutes. It is very ghostly in sound and sight. Hang tight for those of y...ou wishing for sun. It will come #newfoundland #newfoundlandandlabrador #newfoundlandphotos #newfoundlandphotography
Hoping mother nature will bring me one of these soon! Pouch Cove Newfoundland and Labrador 2019.
The old Hamilton Banker lays on its side slowly rusting away. I have had my eye on this ship for a while now. I made several trips before I was able to get the conditions I thought would add the kind of atmosphere worthy of this old beauty. Last time I posted an ship it was the SS Kyle. I read many p stories of the ship over the years. If anyone has any stories to tell of this ship I would love to hear them! #newfoundland #newfoundlandandlabrador #oldship #shipwreck

Thank you HGTV Canada for featuring two of my prints on the latest episode of Rock Solid Builds! For those of you who haven't seen Rock Solid Builds check it out on HGTV Canada. One of the best shows going! If you want to see some of Newfoundland this is the show for you
A few years ago a giant iceberg sat off the coast of Grates Cove. I was lucky enough to spend a morning shooting it. This is a shot I forgot about until I started looking through my archives. I zoomed in close to emphasize this thing towering over the coastline. Looking forward to shooting some more of these giants. Looks like icebergs are starting to grace our shores again :)
If you are on instagram check out my account @gord_follett_photography. I have been adding some videos and guides about parts of Newfoundland. Looking forward to seeing you over there

I had the pleasure of creating some photos for Newfoundland Tourism last year. Here is one of them! If you are wondering where this is, it's in Chance Cove. Everytime I walk by this spot on the way to the sea stacks I thought this might be an interesting shot. As you can tell it was a foggy day and I was lucky enough to be there when these beautiful flowers were in bloom. So many reasons to visit Chance Cove. Add this one to the list!
Merry Christmas! Hope you all have a safe and wonderful holiday. Enjoy
Here is a black and white version of this lone cluster of trees during a fresh snowfall. I think I like the black on white version better. What do you think?
I have walked by this cluster of trees many times during the summer and fall. They looked lonely off on their own. I thought this would make a great minimalist shot especially in the snow. I was lucky enough to shoot this before the rain melted all the snow. Looks like the snow will have to wait until after Christmas according to the forecast. Enjoy and have a great day :)
Here is something that might lift your spirits this holiday season. Some of you that have been following me for a while may be familiar with this scene. I had shot a similar photo of this spot some years back. I decided to revisit this scene to see if I could recapture some of that same magical light on that night a few years back. The night was calm and the snow was fresh allowing it to stick to the trees allowing the park lights to illuminate the entire scene. I love visiting Bowring Park every year when the Christmas lights are on after a fresh snowfall. It gives meaning to the phrase winter wonderland. Hopefully this lifts your spirits this Christmas season! Enjoy and have a great day :)
The best part of winter is the first few snowfalls. For some reason it sticks to the trees a little more and makes everything white and festive. I went for a more minimalist type shot this morning. I have had my eye on this spot for a winter shot. I always like shots like this and how they stir your imagination. What comes to your mind when you see this?
I shot this after a week of a state of emergency due to the worst storm of my life. It was nice to get out on a calm and peaceful morning at the Heart's Content lighthouse. After looking around for a few minutes I noticed this interesting ice to use in the foreground. The wind must have blown away most of the snow here leaving only some ice. As the sun rose it illuminated the ice and sky creating a beautiful cotton candy color. Winter is on the horizon. Looking forward to some nice soft snow but not a raging storm like that. Hope you enjoyed! Have a great day
If you decide to visit the Eastport Peninsula, check out the town of Salvage. I made several trips to the town and spent some time taking in sunsets overlooking this little piece of land occupied by some old homes. While up on a hill overlooking this I could hear the whales coming up for air in the bay. The seabirds were plentiful this evening and the boats were working their way back in for the day. It is a great place to take in the sites and sounds while watching the sunset. Hopefully this warms your day a bit on this windy and wet day :)
I had the pleasure of visiting Salvage a few weeks back. I spent a calm evening shooting this old place well after sunset. The only thing I could here were the sounds of birds and a whale coming up for a breath in the distance. It was a perfect evening minus the flies :)
Sometimes you can plan all you like for a shot and Mother Nature will hand you something else. I decided to head out to Chance Cove for a morning to shoot one of the sea stacks. It was a cold morning and mostly clear. Clear skies are usually not a landscape photographers friend. Unfortunately you just have to work with what you got. After shooting the sea stack I headed back along the trail. I always try to pay attention to my surroundings on the way back just in case I see something interesting for a future trip. As luck would have it, I looked back as I was walking along the trail and my attention was drawn to how the light was shining through the trees and along the path. I had to be quick because the position of the light was changing fast. I managed to snap a few shots before the moment was gone. Thank you Mother Nature :)
I had the pleasure of visiting the Eastport Peninsula this past week. Check out this beautiful sunset overlooking the town of Salvage. I was lucky enough to catch the sun setting over the hill which created a fantastic sun burst. It was a great week visiting that place and the surrounding area :)
Here is a black and white version of the S.S. Kyle I recently shot. What do you think?
Great summer sunrise at Cuckolds Cove yesterday morning! If you want an easy place to take in a sunrise, look no further than Cuckolds Cove. You will hear plenty of seabirds and might even be lucky enough to see some whales. Looks like this will be a great week to take in some summer sunrises. Get out and enjoy while it lasts :)
Check out the coastline at the Cape Race Lighthouse! I had a great time visiting this place. I will definitely be returning to this place. I shot this in the evening. I had some other shots in mind for the morning but Mother Nature wasn't having it. That morning I had some of the most amazing experiences even though I did not get a shot. A low fog rolled in and brought the most moisture in the air I have ever experienced. My lens was covered in moisture within seconds. I cou...ldn't clean it fast enough to get a shot. Before all this I encountered a moose or caribou in the fog when it was still dark. All I could see was the silhouette of the huge rack on it's head and the outline of it's size. I stood still watching until he left. The fog was low enough I could see the stars. Shortly after the moose left a shooting star streaked across the sky. With the fog rolling in and out as the sun was rising I was treated to some amazing light even though I did not get the shot. I still walked away with some great memories :) See more
I just want to say a huge THANK YOU for the response for this photo of the S. S. Kyle. I especially want to thank those who took the time to share their stories of the Kyle. Take some time and read the comments in the original post. I could write a book about the stories and history of the Kyle from these comments. It is amazing how connected this ship is to the people of Newfoundland. Thanks again and have a great day!
"Ghost Ship" known as the SS Kyle sits grounded in Harbour Grace. I have been planning this shot for quite some time now. I wanted certain conditions to create a ghostly atmosphere. It was a calm and foggy morning allowing for some reflections. I would have liked a bit more fog but this still did the trick. Hope you enjoy!
In case you did not know I'm on Instagram. Would love to see you over there My username is gord_follett_photography. Have a great day!
If it's coastlines you seek, look no further than Newfoundland! From rocky shorelines to amazing sea stacks and icebergs that add to the beauty of this place. There seems to be no end to the variety and beauty of our coastlines. I have only photographed a small portion of our shores and plan to add to this collection. In the meantime take a look at some amazing coastlines of Newfoundland.
Mother Nature was kind to me a few mornings ago at Chance Cove. Not only was it a stellar sunrise I was greeted with bald eagles gliding by and capelin flipping on the beach below. I could hear the capelin flipping on the beach below. As I was walking back along the trail had an encounter with a bald eagle. I heard some noise in a tree and then the flapping of wings. I eye turned to look a bald eagle was flying right at me. It swerved about 10 feet in front of me. That got my heart pumping. That was the closest I have ever been to one of them. You really get a sense of how large they are when they fly at you :) Chance Cove has the full package as it relates to nature :)
Capelin rolling in Chance Cove! What a beautiful morning!
What comes to your mind when you see this image? My son said it looks like The Void in Minecraft This is not an image you would normally see me post. I have always loved minimalist photography. I do try to incorporate some of that in my own photos from time to time. This shot is the closest I have come to a pure minimalist shot. Given the conditions it was ideal for a minimalist shot. The fog was some of the thickest I have ever seen. The waves slowly rolled in and a person was standing in the distance. I shot with no expectations. What do you think of this style of photography? Would love to hear your thoughts :)
Torbay Point is one of the best coastlines on the island. Every time I visit this place I find something new. Check this jagged coastline leading down to the ocean. This is a great spot to take in a sunrise. As a bonus there were a few whales in the distance while I was shooting this. Enjoy your day :)
It's been a while since I visited Fogo Island. It is one of those places that has a magical feel about it. Over several visits I experienced some of the best light of my life. Take a few moments and experience some of the magical light I had the pleasure of witnessing.
Here is another shot of the Stiles Cove Waterfall. I love waterfalls in general, but there is something about a waterfall flowing into the ocean. It is almost magical. I usually try to capture a shot based on how I feel about a scene. Here is my rendition of how I envisioned this scene as I stood on a cliff looking toward this beautiful waterfall flowing into the ocean. Have a great day :)
What a beautiful scene at Stiles Cove along the East Coast Trail. The waterfall in the distance and the sound of the waves crashing along the rocks is the sound of peace on earth. I spent a few hours here checking out this spot and settled on the view from above. Looking forward to more views like this in the coming months. Enjoy this beautiful day :)
The Lupins are up! I spent yesterday morning shooting this beautiful scene during a very calm morning. It was very peaceful as there was no wind or waves. Every now and then you would hear a bird. It was cold, but the amazing light was more than enough to warm my heart. Get out and enjoy some nature before the Caplin weather rolls in. Hope this brightens your day :)
You can plan all you like for a particular shot and it will still not work out the way you like. Then there are other times you just happen upon a moment like this when the sun peaks through for a short time to create some amazing rays. I didn't think too much about this shot. I just snapped to see what I would get. I always loved this coastline. I had planned to shoot it someday. I had been driving by when I noticed the light peaking through. I parked and quickly got to shooting. Looks like it was time to shoot this beautiful coastline along Flatrock. Hope this brightens your day!
Here are some recent photos I shot over the last few months for those that missed them. Something to enjoy on this rainy day
I have driven past Shag Rock many times. I had always intended to take a shot of these rocks. As I was driving nearby the haze of the sunlight and the look of the rocks caught my eye. I had to take a shot. It was a beautiful evening with plenty of colour and atmosphere. Have a great day and enjoy the sunlight while it lasts!
Another shot of the Port Rexton Iceberg just as the mist begins to roll in over the hills. It was fun to spend some time with this beauty while it lasted. Crossing my fingers we get a few more big icebergs before this is all over. Have a great day :)
Here is another shot of the Sibley's Cove Iceberg. Shortly after this shot some powerful waves came in and knocked off the peak on the right. I'm glad I was able to get this shot in before that happened. Hoping for more icebergs before the season is over. Hope this brightens your day. Have a great day :)
The ocean is beautiful and terrifying at the same time. I shot this at Sibley's Cove while visiting the iceberg. I had to take in some wave shots. It can be hard to figure out what to focus on with so much chaos along the shores. Here is a small scene with some big waves crashing along the rocks. The light and shadows along with the mist created by the waves made for some interesting atmosphere. As a wave crashed along the rocks another big wave was working it's way into have it's turn. Even though the waves and ocean are beautiful when they are raging I keep my distance. While shooting the Sibley's Cove iceberg, some exceptionally huge waves came in which caused the peak of the iceberg to break off. It was a bit scary. On days like this keep your distance from the shore. Have a great day :)
I had the pleasure of visiting the Sibley's Cove Iceberg a few days ago. Here is a shot of the peak as the sun was setting. I hadn't planned this particular shot. As I was walking by the sunlight and the shadows it created was striking. I didn't think too much about the shot other than just to include the sun, the peak and the shadow. It didn't last too long. It was a beautiful moment. Hope you enjoy and have a great day!
This is a shot of my little boy exploring the Port Rexton Iceberg with me. It hasn't been an easy time for him with school out as it has been for many other children. I try to take him hiking or visiting icebergs with me as much as I can so he can experience some nature and take his mind off things. It definitely has a positive effect on him mentally. For those of you who want a way to brighten your day, get out and enjoy some nature :)
One of the best places for a sunrise is Torbay Point on Cobbler's Path. The sun only peaked out for a few moments allowing me to capture this shot. This is one of my favourite vantage points to take in the sunrise. I love how the path leads into the distance down to the ocean. It is almost as if one has found the edge of the world. I hope this brightens your day :)
It is that time of year again where we get a visit from these ancient beauties again. It seems to be a little slower start this year. I guess it depends on where you are on the island. Either way I will take it. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting this wonder of nature. Hope you enjoy too :)
The flow of Flatrock Falls is higher than normal this time of year. The water was so high a nearby river was overflowing and running near the falls. This was an opportunity to create something a little different. It was a relaxing evening listening and watching the flow of the falls. Have a great May 24 weekend :)
Here is some sunlight for you today :) I captured this fantastic sun beam at Cape St. Francis well after sunrise. It was just one of those mornings that kept on giving. As I was thinking about leaving the sunlight began to peak through the clouds creating some amazing sun rays. I spent a good half hour just watching and shooting. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did that morning. Have a great day everyone :)
Being that it is Mother's Day, I thought I would share something bright! Happy Mother's Day :) Here is a beautiful sunrise at Cape St. Francis. I hope this brightens your day on one of the most important days of the year. Enjoy and have a great day :)
One of my favourite places to check out a sunrise is Torbay Point along Cobbler's Path. It was a mostly cloudy mourning with some interesting clouds. This is a different angle from what I have shot in the past. I love how the point leads out into the ocean. The view from here is stunning and well worth the early rise to experience this :)
Here is a scene that has many interesting elements working together resulting in an epic moment etched in my memory. It was challenging trying to deal with the mist and glare of the sun together resulting in some nasty sun flares. On top of that it was windy enough that I had to be careful my tripod did not shake. I was able to bring together the sun setting just above the trees as light beamed along the waterfall creating a fantasy like atmosphere. Meanwhile the waves crashed along the rocks below creating some interesting streaks. I hope you enjoy viewing this image as much as I loved shooting it :)
One does not have to go far to find some interest along our beautiful coastline. Here are a cluster of rocks that would not have been noticed on a normal blue sky day. With the right atmosphere and a few in camera adjustments one can turn what was a mundane scene into something ethereal and moody. How do you feel about this image? Would love to hear your thoughts :)
Last summer I visited the Tickle Cove Sea Arch. It is interesting how nature can carve such beautiful structures over time. Here is my ethereal creation of the scene that evening. The waves were not too strong so instead I decided to create a soft ethereal scene as the light of the sun peaked through the clouds. If you ever visit this place, please be very careful. The rocks are very jagged and could easily puncture your skin if you fall. Stay safe and have a great day!
Another shot from my archives. Last year was a great year for icebergs. You didn't have to go far to get eyes on one. I came across this iceberg on a windy morning just off the coast of Pouch Cove. As you can see the ocean was raging that day. I managed to capture a wave crashing up against the backside of the iceberg. The great thing about that morning was the mist in the air from the winds created a haze which made for some interesting light. Hope you enjoy this shot as much as I enjoyed taking it :)
