I spoke with CBC Radio-Canada today about the Night Market, Dryer Fire events and the M.S Norgoma today. Sadly, I don't speak French but if you do, please listen around 4:20 this afternoon on 88.1 FM in SSM or online: https://ici.radio-canada.ca//emi/l-heure-de-pointe-toronto

Recently, I received news that a person or persons in the community feel as though abusers have been prioritized over victims at events that I can only assume I... have been involved with. I am incredibly saddened and disturbed by this news, but I have been struggling with how to deal with this situation with very limited information and no one communicating with me about a specific incident, circumstances or concerns directly. I talked about it with a few people I respect who do arts and community work and I have decided to take the following actions: 1)STATE: I believe survivors. I would never knowingly prioritize abusers over victims. I also know relationships can be very complex and I do not have the capacity to determine who to believe in many situations. That being said: If you ever feel threatened or unsafe at any of my events, Please come talk to me, if you can (or get your friend or someone to come talk to me). We can figure out how to safely address the situation. I dont have a problem asking someone to leave. 2) ENFORCE: ZERO tolerance for racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and any other oppressive, abusive and hateful language and/or behaviour at my events. In the name of education and patience, you will be warned once before being asked to leave in the case of you just being ignorant and not hateful or abusive. 3) CONSULT with community members about what makes a space safe(r) and how the events I run can be safe(r). Please email me at [email protected] if you have any ideas. Starting at tomorrows (Tuesday, July 24) open mic on the M.S. Norgoma I will be taking some time to start this discussion in person. I will continue to consult with a number of people I know who work in the arts, community and social services. 4) DRAFT a safe(r) space policy for the events I put on based on community consultation and research into similar policies. This will be a living document. It will be posted at all events I present, and venues and people working these events will be asked to sign it. 5) CO - ORGANIZE a forum on Keeping Our Art Spaces Safe(r) with representatives from a cross-section of the community (probably in September) I truly hope that these steps can help people feel safer, at least at the events I run and am involved with. If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions, please get in touch with me. Best, Nicole
