JIMMY’S LAW For Immediate Release, Sept. 27, 2011 THE ORIGIN OF JIMMY’S LAW... The idea for Jimmy’s Law came about after Aaron Nagy received a phone call from a co-worker who informed him that Aaron’s long time friend Jimmy Ray Wiebe had been murdered at the Shell station in Yorkton. What made this all the more tragic was that June 20th was to be Jimmy’s final shift at the station before moving on to a new job. Aaron was in a state of shock & disbelief until he heard it being discussed on radio. On June 22nd, after Aaron had a chance to absorb the shock of Jimmy’s murder, he thought, What could I do to make sure something like this never, ever happens again? The answer was to begin a campaign for Jimmy’s Law. The Jimmy’s Law proposal would provide protection for workers who pull overnight shifts in convenience stores, gas bars as well as other establishments. Also, the law would put restrictions on workers pulling shifts alone. An online petition was initiated, as well as a Facebook group. The online petition can be viewed here: www.ipetitions.com/petition/jimmyslaw . The Facebook group can be found here: www.facebook.com/jimmyslaw . A letter writing campaign to provincial Minister of Justice Don Morgan, who also has the portfolios of Attorney-General & Minister of Labour Relations & Workplace Safety, was launched. With the help of another friend, Aaron contacted the British Columbia Federation of Labour, who put him in touch with Larry Hubich. Hubich, who is the President of the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour (S.F.L.), invited Aaron to speak at the S.F.L.’s Occupational Health and Safety Conference. On September 11th, Aaron addressed the conference and made a moving speech talking about his dear friend and explaining the impetus behind Jimmy’s Law. As a result of the speech, Aaron now has the backing of the S.F.L.’s Occupational Health and Safety Committee in the push to enact Jimmy’s Law. -30- For more information, please contact, Founder: Aaron Nagy (306) 782-0809 Media Officer: Tom Hallick (204) 888-3355 E-Mail: [email protected] On The Web:www.ipetitions.com/petition/jimmyslaw www.facebook.com/jimmyslaw www.gorillacagemedia.com
