Read this NPR story about how home improvement projects have surged during the pandemic. It's much the same as here in Canada. "The categories of home improvement surging the most, though, have to do with work outside the home just outside of it, that is, primarily in the backyard. There has been an almost threefold increase in building decks, and the number of people putting up fences is up sharply as well..." https://www.npr.org//why-home-improvement-has-surged-and-h If you are looking to start a home improvement project to build a new deck, etc... or just need help repairing an existing fence or deck, drop us a message.

This post was originally done in the fall but the message still resonates. Make sure any contractor you hire is licensed and qualified to do the job. There are many instances where people hired unlicensed contractors and caused untold issues legally and also the quality of the workmanship. Contact us at www.calgaryhomerepairs.ca for qualified Red Seal contractors, that are licensed with the City of Calgary. http://calgaryhomerepairs.ca//the-city-of-calgary-guideli/

With this extended Covid-19 restrictions, many local businesses are suffering. Supporting local businesses have never been as important as it is nowadays but authorities need to understand that keeping everyone at home is just hurting everyones ability to just simply take care of their families and their lives. The stipend the govt is offering is not a solution as people are suffering for over 12 months now. At the same time, this pandemic is serious and we need to be careful... and protect our families, colleagues and loved ones. Many people don't like the protocols but they are here to help us all. Whether we like it or not, it's just common sense and you can fight it; and some think it's a hoax, until a friend or loved one gets covid, gets sick and god forbid, dies. No one wants that. As our economy now is reopening, let's make an effort to stay vigilant. I for one, do not want to go back to lockdowns and closing of businesses/ livelihoods. Wear masks, get your vaccine, stay safe and take care of one another. Be civil. Let's help out great local businesses get back on their feet and flourish again. There is too much partisan rhetoric in life these days. Let's try to work along one another to solve these problems. Please support our great local businesses and champion common sense, solutions by working together, not against one another. Who's with me? Anyone out there looking for a certified and qualified contractor/ handyman? We are all local contractors supporting other local businesses and we do this by following protocols. All our guys wear masks and follow covid protocols; and none of us have contracted covid during this pandemic. (Thank God! ) www.calgaryhomerepairs.ca

With this pandemic, I decided to create a gym in my home... I bought a treadmill and some weight equipment just as the pandemic began and I hv to say it was the best investment I made to weather this Covid-19 pandemic. Not only great for the body, but I hv to say, it is fantastic for my mind as well! Many of us are creating dedicated rooms to get moving indoors (eBay Canada’s treadmill sales are up a staggering 280 per cent). I have been getting a lot of cold calls from people who work with HomeAdvisors, Angi Home Services (formerly Angies's List) and new companies like Get Assist. These guys basically sell leads to contractors and they make their money by selling the same leads to multiple contractors. What do you guys think of these business practices? And if you have worked with these types of companies, what can you share with the community about this. Please share your likes and dislikes. Have a great weekend and stay safe to everyone..... have some fun as well!! www.calgaryhomerepairs.ca

We blogged about the shortage in skilled tradespeople last week and many of you responded in favour of encouraging more women into the skilled trades. http://calgaryhomerepairs.ca//more-skilled-tradespeople-w/. I really caught onto this idea and have been thinking a lot abut this over the last week. One of the most inspiring people I found, when I looked into this more, is Mandy Rennehan of Freshco who is not just doing well in this industry, but she is flourishing. Great job Mandy! You are inspiring. https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca//breaking-stigmas-as-canada-s- . Watch her interview on BNN Bloomberg.

It's no surprise that home improvement projects have skyrocketed during the Covid-19 pandemic. Not bragging, but I myself have done several projects, including: 1. resurfaced and fixed my hardwood floors 2. redone my kitchen sinks 3. checked and replaced my smoke/ carbon monoxide detectors 4. repainted a downstairs bedroom and hung up new pictures and a large mirror... 5. redone some older floor mouldings and trims (and learned to use a miter saw!) Due to the hailstorms in the summer, I also had my roof re-shingled, siding replaced and eavestroughs redone (Insurance paid for this and the contractors to do this, thank God)... (Yeah, I still also watch lot's of Netflix in the evenings...) Instead of getting bored and go into a funk, maybe you can do a few projects around the home and stop worrying about our situations. Please spread the word on being careful not to hire unlicensed and uninsured contractors. I saw this story on the news recently and it really is consumer beware out there. I liked it when the (unlicensed) company spokesman said they did not threaten anyone and the homeowner had proof from messages sent them. Just be careful out there and know there are many licensed, honest and legit contractors out there. Please give this a read and like /share. thanks. ... http://calgaryhomerepairs.ca//beware-of-unlicensed-and-un/

I just had a scare At 330am this morning, my smoke detectors went off! Half dazed, I ran down to the kitchen and downstairs and there was no sign of smoke and so I naturally thought it was carbon monoxide. I got my family out of the house (yes it was cold!). to make a long story short, I later found out it was the battery on my detectors that had gone off because they were due to be replaced. A reminder to everyone out there, to check your smoke and CO2 detectors, change the battery and also if they are hooked up to yr home security system, to have a professional come in to check that everything is alright. Take Care and Stay Safe. http://calgaryhomerepairs.ca//testing-smoke-detectors-and/

The best time to do some home interior renovations is right now during the winter. Just because the weather is cold outside, doesn't mean you should stop all your home projects and hibernate through the winter. In fact some interior renovations should best be done during the cold dry months... for instance: That same dry interior air that affects your skin in winter can help a fresh coat of paint dry more quickly, and you may also find better deals on paint at your local hard...ware store, which means you can get a fresh look for less. Or did you know that December and January are the peak months for house fires, which is why you should kick off these colder months by evaluating and upgrading your home's safety features, such as carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors. Check out 10 of the possible home improvement projects you can do / should do during these winter months. https://www.bobvila.com//10-parts-of-the-home-you-can-and- See more

Here’s the awful truth... you can’t always trust google or other search engines as advertisers pack the listings with multiple repair companies for the same business... and that business if often not the best or the most qualified. They are often grifters that pay to get top placement. Same with online lead sellers like HomeStars and HomeAdvisors, they sell yr leads to multiple contractors but usually the one that pays them more for a higher rating or better placement gets the jobs... be careful and do your homework out there. https://www.cbc.ca//appliance-repair-industry-online-listi

How are we as consumers to know any better? I watched a recent episode of Marketplace and I am disgusted at some so-called home repair experts that either don't know what they are doing; or they just want to scam the consumer by doing un-needed costly repairs. At CalgaryHomeRepairs.ca we are a group of consumers like you who just want to help other consumers get a qualified tradesman to do a quality job, period. We encourage community members to share their experiences and let us know who are the good trades people out there and also who are the bad ones to stay away from. We actually take your recommendations and go out to vet them before promoting them on our website. www.calgaryhomerepairs.ca https://www.youtube.com/watch

Hail damage to your Calgary home from those 2 monster hail storms in June and July 2020? tell us about your experiences with both insurance companies and the contractors... Its been literally hell dealing with insurance companies and contractors... The number 1 most hated reply is "...we are very busy and we can't always get back to clients in a timely manner" WHY? there is not a shortage of people looking for work during this pandemic and insurance companies should be doing ...better than just giving out poor excuses. It is also understood that roofing and siding contractors are busy until 2021 but they still need to make an effort to get quotes out quickly and simply do what they promise to customers. If you promise to get back to them with quotes in a "couple days", then get back to them within 2 days... a couple means 2, not 7 or 10 or whenever you call to chase them... your customers or potential customers should not have to wait for you to reply... its your job to do so. Also if your company doesn't have enough people to handle all this, then bring in people to help with the backlog. https://www.cbc.ca//calgary-hail-storm-insurance-delay-1.5 https://www.cbc.ca//copperfield-calgary-hail-damage-1.5663 Share with us your good and bad stories and the best will get a gift card from Starbucks on us!
