Happy New Year! We wish everyone all the best for 2021! I decided to kick our New Year off with a new cheese, which also let me try out the Christmas present that Jeff made for me - it is a "curd cutter" used for making the horizontal cuts in the cheese curd. It was so awesome! Oh, and the cheese today was a rustic Jack cheese, which was pressed in the cheesecloth instead of a mould (quite different than the process for most of the pressed cheeses). This one gets to age for a... while, so we don't get to taste it anytime soon; but we did try one of the Belper Knolle cheese balls last night. Those were the ones we made a couple of weeks ago (the ones rolled in pepper). It was amazing. Such a great flavour, very similar to a parmesan, and it had only been aging for a couple of weeks. Winnie is free Today was Winnie's x-ray on her knee. Dr said the bone has healed nicely and she no longer need to be keep in her crate...yay. we have another month of being on the leash for walks and stairs. We are so proud of Winnie and how amazing she has been these past few months.

We moved Ellie back the herd too, but she was delayed for a few minutes first. She was in heat, and we decided to bring over Van Gogh, our mini-Lamancha buckling for a "date" before we moved Ellie. He has spent the last month or so "preparing", so he is very smelly and his poor face went from a beautiful white, to what you see here LOL. Frankie is such a great boy - he walks so well on a lead with us. We took him back to the stall with the "big girls" herd now that all the really small goats have made it to their new homes. Moving Day! Frankie (our gentle giant) and Ellie (our Oberhasli) get to come back to the herd today. We had moved Frankie to a different pen a few months ago because he is SOOO big and we didn't want him to accidentally injure any of the babies that we had. Ellie went with him to keep him company (she is just a sweet girl, and gets along really well with Frankie). Now, all the babies have gone to their new homes (except Molson - but he is in the pen with Jiminy and Flower, si...nce he can't leave the "ladies" alone). Fireball and Malibu are the two kids from this spring that are staying here in that herd, and they are a good size now. They might be a little shocked when they meet Frankie though! Breeding for our 2021 babies has officially started at our farm (yay)! Our first couple of "dates" took place this week: Delilah and Prince on Tuesday night - which lasted a whole 10 seconds , and Lily and Thumper this afternoon - which was a more respectable 30 seconds ! We have lots of people wanting girls this spring, so everyone keep their fingers crossed for us! And I have to tell you how much I just love all these goats - the girls are all so sweet, and the boys (no ...matter how stinky) are all amazing, gentle, and just so nice to work with, even when they are in full "rut" like this. We gave Thumper a pedicure, gave his fur a trim/brushing, and cleaned him up a bit, and he was so great about it. And on my way back into the barn, I caught Ariel nursing on Apricot (Apricot is her mom) - but Ariel is over 2 years old! She did this last year (started nursing after Apricot's babies had gone to their new homes), and we are so shocked that she is doing it again, as Ariel was also a mom this year! Quick update on Winnie. On Oct 1 she had her 2 week checkup with the Vet. Her knee is healing nicely however she licked some of her stitches out. Winnie got 5 staples and has to wear a cone for 2 weeks. Next check up is in 6 weeks. Instead of the plastic cone we are using a ZEN Collar from one of our friends...thanks Terri. Couple pics of our girl. one with the Zen collar as she sleeps in her crate. Also Winnie is spoiled so she gets to lick out the last little bits from a sour cream container....She Loves it!

What a crazy year - it seems like we've had so many problems around here... Our water hydrant at the barn has been leaking (actually, it wouldn't shut off properly). We had a plumber out to fix it, and he wasn't able to (he figured something was broken with the seal at the bottom of the pipe). So... we had to hire someone to dig it out before the ground freezes. We've been waiting for them for a few weeks, and they finally made it out here yesterday with the excavator. Fortunately, Jeff was able to fix the problem (we hope) by replacing the piece at the bottom of the hydrant pipe. We left it over night, and seems to be working ok, so today he will fill the hole back in :) #GottaGoat #FarmLife #gottagoatfarm #okanaganlife
