It's Heritage Week! Heritage week is February 15 to 21, 2021 and is a week to tell Canada’s collective stories through our special places, whether they are hist...oric lighthouses or schools, places of faith, industrial complexes, or cultural landscapes. Our shared heritage in all its forms has the power to create a sense of belonging. This week Government House will be sharing a series of posts to celebrate the history of the Government House Historical Society and the parts they have played in the heritage of Government House. Saving the House Did you know Government House was almost demolished? In 1971, a number of historically minded people belonging to various groups [including the Regina Chamber of Commerce, Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire, Regina Council of Women and the City of Regina] banded together to form the Society for the Preservation and Restoration of Saskatchewan House (later the Government House Historical Society) to save the house. By 1980, many of the house’s historical contents and fixtures were returned or restored. The GHHS continues to preserve, promote and enhance Government House as a public heritage site. #HeritageWeek2021 #GovernmentHouseSK Government House Historical Society Museums Association of Saskatchewan Heritage Saskatchewan

Over the next few weeks, Government House will be presenting a new series, Government House Artifacts. We hope you enjoy getting a closer look at some of the it...ems in the House. The Cutter Now, you’re probably wondering why we don’t call the cutter a sleigh The biggest differences between a cutter and a sleigh is the size. Cutters were created for leisurely driving among one or two couples. They were meant to be snug and comfortable (often used for courting). Sleighs, though, were built to accommodate a larger group. They offer a larger capacity so entire families or groups of people can travel together. The cutter in Government House originally belonged to Lieutenant Governor George Brown. It was passed down from one LG to the next until 1945 when it was turned over to the care of the RCMP. The Cutter came back to Government House after the new addition was added in 2005 and is displayed along with the landau in the Queen Elizabeth lI Wing. #yourhistory #GovernmentHouseSK Regina Senior Citizens' Centre Government House Historical Society Museums Association of Saskatchewan Tourism Regina Tourism Saskatchewan

Stitching Stories Tea Cozie The item made its way from India to England, then to Canada and was finally donated by a Regina resident. It is made with various me...tallic threads and shapes on a saffron-yellow cotton. Indonesian Patch This is a modern piece created with the technique known as Kalaga and was purchased by an EAC member. It is made with sequins and tinseled cording on a black velvet background. The elephant is a padded applique. Kalagas originated in Burma (Myanmar) many centuries ago. Cloth is stretched over a frame and then beautiful heavy metallic thread is sewn into place by hand. Sometimes padding and sequins are added to give a three-dimensional effect. Kalagas are famous for having backgrounds crafted in beautiful swirled patterns of sequins. Kalagas are generally made from linen, silk, velvet and cotton embellished with sequins, embroidery, beads, pearls. #StitchingStories #GovernmentHouseSK Government House Historical Society Regina Stitchery Guild KinderBuzz.com Tourism Regina

Here's the second episode of the LG Offices - Then and Now! The west wing of Government House houses the LG offices today. BUT that wasn't always the case. Whe...n the House was built in the late 1800s, the north wing held the kitchen, pantry, etc. on the main floor and staffing quarters on the second floor.
