Fire Prevention Officer Rick Dahl last day at work was on January 4th, 2021. Rick finished his career in the Fire Prevention Branch. Congratulations for 32 years of dedication and loyal service to the GPFD and City of Grande Prairie. All the best in your retirement.
I wish to announce the retirement of Deputy Fire Chief Janine Saastad from the City of Grande Prairie. Janine started with the Fire department on December 16, 1996 as an Alarm Room Operator. The Dispatch Center was then located at the Central Fire Hall. In 2001 she advanced to the rank of Emergency Services Dispatch Supervisor. Through commitment and dedication she advanced to the rank of Deputy Fire Chief overseeing Fire Prevention and Dispatch in 2006. Janine has played a ...significant role in the success of our Dispatch Center and Fire Department as a whole. Under her guidance the Dispatch Centre expanded to serve all of North Western Alberta and are now providing service to over 60 Fire Departments. During Janine’s 24 years of service she received the following awards: 2008 - Alberta Emergency Service Medal 2012 Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal 2016 20 Year Long Service Recognition with the City of Grande Prairie 2018 22 Year Bar Alberta Emergency Service Medal I want to thank Janine for her loyal and dedicated service and wish her a wonderful retirement.

The kitchen is the heart of the home. Keep safe this Thanksgiving. Do you have a turkey fryer? NFPA continues to believe that turkey fryers that use cooking oil, as... currently designed, are not suitable for safe use by even a well-informed and careful consumer. These types of turkey fryers use a substantial quantity of cooking oil at high temperatures and units currently available for home use pose a significant danger that hot oil will be released at some point during the cooking process. In addition, the burners that heat the oil can ignite spilled oil. The use of turkey fryers by consumers can lead to devastating burns, other injuries, and the destruction of property. NFPA urges those who prefer fried turkey to seek out professional establishments, such as grocery stores, specialty food retailers, and restaurants, for the preparation of the dish, or consider a new type of oil-less turkey fryer. Do you use a microwave to cook? This photo shows how easily someone could get scald and burn injuries from improper placement. Here are some tips to keep safe. - Place or install the microwave oven at a safe height within easy reach of all users. If possible, the face of the person using the microwave oven should be higher than the front of the microwave oven door to reduce the risk of a scald. - Always supervise children when they are using the microwave oven. - Open micro...waved food away from the face. Hot steam escaping from a container of microwaved food or the food itself can cause burns. It is Fire Prevention Week!! October 4th to 10th.
