Happy World Water Day! This annual event was created by the United Nations to highlight the importance of fresh water and sustainable management of fresh water. This year’s theme is Nature for Water. The Green Party of Beaches-East York invites you to consider nature-based solutions to help combat the water challenges we face in the 21st century. These Nature-Based Solutions include planting trees to replenish forests, reconnecting rivers to floodplains, and restoring wetl...ands. These solutions are sustainable and cost-effective ways to help rebalance the water cycle, mitigate the effects of climate change and improve human health and livelihoods. Here are some quick facts to consider: 2.1 billion people lack access to safely managed drinking water services. By 2050, the world’s population will have grown by an estimated 2 billion people and global water demand could be up to 30% higher than today. Globally, over 80% of the wastewater generated by society flows back into the environment without being treated or reused. An estimated 1.8 billion people use an unimproved source of drinking water with no protection against contamination from human feces. The number of people at risk from floods is projected to rise from 1.2 billion today to around 1.6 billion in 2050 nearly 20% of the world’s population. Keeping these in mind, the Green Party of Beaches-Easy York encourages everyone to consider and manage their own water usage to mitigate the water challenges we face. Tim Rudkins: "There has been no debate on health care and creating a healthy society! The Greens will look into creating a provincial pharmacare program and extending the dental assistance to all citizens. The former will save us billions in prescription costs while the latter will improve the livelihoods of millions."
