Artillery training exercises begin Friday in Guelph From May 7-30, 2021, Canadian Army Reserve personnel from Guelph’s 11th Field Regiment, RCA will be conducting artillery training in the vicinity of Woodlawn Memorial Park in Guelph, Ontario. Activities will include movement of vehicles towing howitzers, set-up and tear-down of artillery equipment, and various soldier drills. The exercises are expected to be conducted on open greenspace at the west end of the property clos...er to Nicklin Road. An Armed Forces spokesperson said there should be no interference with the section of the park containing graves. Activities will occur on Thursday and Friday evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays. Members of the public may see military vehicles and personnel participating in the exercise with unloaded weapons. No firing of any ammunition will take place. This important training is being conducted in order to qualify local Canadian Army Reserve members on basic level courses so they are prepared to participate on future Canadian Armed Forces operations. All soldiers participating will be practicing enhanced Force Health Protection Measures, based on and in addition to Public Health guidelines, including wearing masks, extra sanitizing of equipment and hands, and physical distancing where possible. Participants will remain isolated from the public and will conduct pre-training screening. All measures are being taken to ensure minimum inconvenience to those in the area, although certain areas may be inaccessible during the exercise dates. Members of the public are asked to take extra caution when approaching military vehicles and are thanked in advance for their understanding and co-operation. See more

2020 Community Partner Award On December 14th, 2020, the Kiwanis Club of Guelph was presented with the 2020 Guelph Police Service Community Partner Award. The Guelph Police Service Values, Influences and Peers (VIP) program was started as a pilot project in 1986 for grade 6 students at two schools in the City of Guelph. In 1989, the grade 6 program expanded to cover all the schools in the City of Guelph. The program further expanded in 2008 to include Grades 7 and 8 as part o...f the VIP+ program. Today, students at each of Guelph’s 45 elementary schools participate in a total of eight VIP presentations. VIP is an awareness program that benefits students by discussing essential personal values and the importance of: -Making good decisions -Taking responsibility for their actions -Understanding peer pressure -Self-respect and self-confidence -Respect for others Since the program’s inception, this project has been sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Guelph. The Kiwanis Club's annual monetary donations pay for student and teacher workbooks, which are essential to the program as they offer activities, puzzles, games, and questions that reinforce the information shared during VIP presentations. The Kiwanis Club of Guelph’s unwavering support of the VIP program enables the Guelph Police Service to continue the delivery of the VIP program, creating positive relationships with youth while delivering important social and citizenship messages in a safe and nonjudgmental environment. The award was presented by current VIP officer Constable Brian Murphy and the former VIP officer Constable Kyle Grant. #Guelph #GuelphProud #PrideServiceTrust #GuelphVIP #ValuesInfluencesPeers #GuelphPoliceService #GPS #GuelphPolice #Kiwanis #KiwanisClub #KiwanisClubOfGuelph -KG

In honour of Mental Illness Awareness Week, the Guelph Police Service would like to take a moment to introduce Züri, our very first psychiatric service dog. Züri is a five-year old Giant Schnauzer and works as a Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Service Dog. She has been playing a pivotal role in the recovery of one of our members and helped facilitate their successful return to work this year after having been diagnosed with mental health injuries in 2016. They are now w...orking together in our Forensic Video Unit, helping to manage the influx of digital evidence. Psychiatric service dogs, like Züri, are trained to assist their handlers in managing various psychiatric/mental health disabilities including but not limited to PTSD, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder and bipolar disorder. Psychiatric service dogs are often, but not always, trained by their handlers with the assistance of a professional accredited trainer. They may be trained to perform a variety of tasks which mitigate their handler’s mental health injuries such as interrupting injurious behaviours, scanning the environment for hazards, sensing oncoming panic attacks, reminding the handler to take medication, retrieving medication or other objects, providing a safe barrier for their handler in stressful or threatening situations, etc. The Guelph Police Service is committed to our members’ mental health and overall well-being, and we are very proud to have Züri as a part of our team. Please remember that PTSD can affect people from all walks of life. For more information, please visit the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder page on the Canadian Mental Health Association website (https://cmha.ca/documen/post-traumatic-stress-disorder-ptsd). #MIAW20 #MIAW2020 #MentalHealth #Guelph #GuelphProud #PrideServiceTrust #GuelphPoliceService #GPS #GuelphPolice -KG

Integrated Mobile Police And Crisis Team (IMPACT) What is IMPACT and how does this Team support our Community? Since 2015, the Canadian Mental Health Association Waterloo Wellington (CMHA WW) and the Guelph Police Service have been working together to provide supportive mental health crisis care to those in need. The Integrated Mobile Police And Crisis Team (IMPACT) is an example of what is possible when community partners work together to support our community. This initiati...ve has transformed the way mental health related calls for service are handled at the Guelph Police Service by providing a collaborative, immediate and comprehensive crisis response for individuals and their families. IMPACT is comprised of five specially trained Mental Health Clinicians who operate directly out of the Guelph Police Service headquarters located at 15 Wyndham Street South in the City of Guelph, and attend calls for service alongside police officers when requested and available. This team was formed with the aim of creating a system in which CMHA WW members and police officers could jointly respond to mental health, addiction and crisis related calls for service. The goal of IMPACT is to ensure individuals have better health outcomes by receiving the most appropriate community-based crisis response at the time of need. This has resulted in a more comprehensive level of care through less-intrusive service interventions and reducing the need for emergency room and hospital involvement. IMPACT assists our community in a number of ways: -Connecting with individuals to assess needs and coordinate services -Providing mobile crisis support -Consulting with police about calls -Sharing resources for supporting officers after a traumatic call -Preparing training sessions and providing resources for police service members -Making presentations in the community From April 1st to August 31st, 2020, IMPACT has served 697 unique individuals, attended 173 live calls for service with police and conducted 482 after-the-fact referrals. Of the 173 live calls with police, 130 of them were diverted from hospitals due to IMPACT intervention. Since its launch, IMPACT has been incredibly successful and both CMHA WW and the Guelph Police Service look forward to continuing and expanding this important joint venture as it evolves and grows to best fit the needs of our citizens. #Guelph #GuelphProud #PrideServiceTrust #GuelphPoliceService #GPS #GuelphPolice #IMPACT #CMHAWW #CMHA #MentalHealth #MIAW20 #MIAW2020 -KG
