Today local health units announced a regional approach to mandatory masks. In LGL, this Instruction will require businesses to adopt a policy to ensure facial coverings/masks are worn inside enclosed public spaces. This will come into effect July 7, at 12:01am. This is an added measure to the existing public health measures in place to reduce the spread of COVID-19. A keen observer of human behaviour from behind the counter at the family bakery in Kemptville, Rick Grahame says people are starting to come out of their COVID-...19 shells. In the first weeks after the pandemic was announced, business fell off at Grahame's Bakery known for its famous wood fueled brick oven dating back to 1885; but lately, more and more customers are coming in for their breads, buns, cookies, pies, cakes, tarts and doughnuts... I wish I had two or three right now to go with my early morning tea! "People were scared," Rick said when I dropped by the other day for two loaves and a raspberry turnover which didn't make it very far down the road. "They didn't want to leave the house... now they're more relaxed." In fact, several smiling folks came through Grahame's when I was there, courteously doing the six-foot COVID do-se-do as they left with their goodies. Rick and his sister Debbie Wilson now own and operate the business, an Eastern Ontario institution, boasting one of the few original wood-burning commercial brick ovens in North America; as the black & white pic taken in 1945 demonstrates, even the Chateau Laurier once had a similar setup.
