Gramma's Garden 04.05.2021

it's currently 38 degrees in our new high tunnel, and the risk of hard frosts is decreasing daily. Do you know what that means? Outdoor garden season has officially begun!

It doesn't look like the Easter Bunny got into our radish patch. While we're happy s/he left our microgreens alone, we would have been happy to have provided a sample! Radishes are a favorite food of rabbits. Their gentle crunch and moderately spicey taste makes them a favorite of many chefs and foodies as well! HAPPY EASTER

Bugs, BuGs, BUGS!!! Not all "bugs" are bad. This beautiful young two spotted stink-bug (Perillus bioculatus) stopped by to inspect our indoor garden today. The two spotted stink bug is classified as a beneficial predator and has a preferred diet of (those horrible, bad, bad bugs) the Colorado Potato Beetle but is not a "picky eater" and is willing to feast on many smaller insects.... We're really glad it stopped by for us to take a look and return it to the garden shelves where it can patrol for any uninvited pests! Fun Fact: the more Colorado potato beetles thay the two spotted stink bugs eat, the more red it's shell becomes. They're a great indicator for early infestation detection. This one's light cream color indicates it has likely not found any of it's preferred prey in our garden! thankfully.
