Calling all artists! We want to see your work! This month’s art prompt is Nature, inspired by the artwork of Heather Good. Heather is a Nelson based artist who has several artworks in Gallery 2’s art rental collection, including this work titled Poppy Field. In Heather’s own words: I rely on nature for inspiration, creating semi-abstract works with recognizable and familiar elements. Seeing patterns in stone or brick, noticing the way the leaves have fallen onto the ground...; the myriad of colours and textures on a piece of lichen I create by instinct, interpreting the natural world around me through marks, lines, shapes, patterns taking in my surroundings and galvanizing my creative pathways. For this art prompt, we want you to create a piece of art that is inspired by the natural world around you. You can draw, paint, sculpt, it’s up to you! Grand Theft Terra Firma is an unflinching redress of Canada’s colonial narrative. By combining contemporary popular culture with historical source material, artists David Campion and Sandra Shields disrupt the celebratory mythology of nation building and invite us to critically ev...aluate our own continued and complicated relationship to colonial practices. As the title suggests, the exhibition appropriates the language of digital gaming to reframe the settlement of Canada as a complex heist. Specifically, the title refers to Grand Theft Auto, a series of popular video games considered highly controversial, in part because they require players to commit violent and immoral acts to achieve gaming success. Grand Theft Terra Firma will be showing over the next couple of months. If you haven't been in you need to come see this exhibition, based on the video game Grand Theft Auto. "The artists' use of gaming, satire, and humour provides entry points into difficult knowledge. These strategies encourage us to consider how history can become mythologized in its telling. The exhibition supports discussions around emergent notions of personal awareness and responsibility in the process of decolonization and emphasizes the potential for art to promote critical discourse in divided societies." The gallery is open Tues - Frid 10 am to 4 pm and Sat 10 am to 3 pm.
